About Drenthe
I should have known the sat nav was up to no good the moment it tried to send me through a field of very unimpressed-looking sheep. Five hours of driving from Hull, two ferry mishaps I would rather forget, and there I was, crawling down a dirt track in Drenthe convinced I had accidentally booked a holiday in someone's garden shed.

The mishap came at the worst possible moment. Nature called with some urgency just as I hit what the map optimistically called a road. I spotted what looked like a proper lay-by, swung in with relief, and promptly sank my front wheel into a drainage ditch disguised by enthusiastic grass. The irony of nearly needing rescue services for a wee stop was not lost on me. Twenty minutes of undignified pushing, swearing, and eventually bribing a passing cyclist with the promise of a biscuit from my glovebox, and I was mobile again. I arrived at the Spier property with mud on my shoes, dignity in tatters, and a newfound appreciation for Dutch civil engineering.

But then I turned the final corner, and something shifted. The cottage sat there like it had been waiting patiently for centuries, not a day less. Proper thatched roof, the kind you only see on chocolate boxes and Sunday night detective dramas. White plaster walls with that slightly weathered look that no amount of money can fake. A small front garden with lavender doing its best to look organised despite clear evidence of bee-related chaos. I stood there with my suitcase handle digging into my palm and just breathed. The air smelled of cut grass and something faintly woody, like old furniture left in sunshine.

The key was exactly where the instructions promised, tucked in a little metal box that required the code-solving skills of a safe cracker. I fumbled it twice, glancing around like a burglar in my own holiday let. The door opened with that satisfying weight of something properly built, not the hollow rattle of modern construction. Inside, the ceiling beams did that charming thing where they dip slightly in the middle, suggesting centuries of holding up the world without complaint. The floorboards creaked in specific spots, a built-in burglar alarm from the 1800s.

I dumped my case in the main bedroom, which overlooked nothing but fields and a single determined-looking horse, and headed straight for the kitchen. The kettle, praise be, was modern and efficient. Tea in hand, I explored properly. The living room had a wood burner that looked like it had stories to tell, and windows that framed the Drenthe landscape like someone had hung paintings with unreasonable skill. Everything felt solid, intentional, unhurried. No sharp edges, no trying too hard.

I stepped outside as evening came on, and the quiet hit me properly. Not silence exactly, but that layered countryside hush where each sound has room to be itself. A distant tractor, birds arguing in a hedge, the wind doing something complicated with the thatch above my head. I thought about my muddy shoes, the sat nav betrayal, the cyclist who probably tells the story of the desperate Englishman to this day. I thought about how I had nearly turned back twice, how the journey had felt like punishment rather than promise.

Sitting on the small wooden bench by the front door, watching the light change over fields that have looked much the same since before my great-grandparents were born, I felt that particular holiday magic start its work. The kind where the getting there falls away, where the mishaps become material, where you suddenly cannot remember why you live any other way. My phone had no signal. I did not check it twice.
