The Sat Nav had other ideas about how to reach Norg, and by the time I realised it was taking me via what appeared to be a farm track designed for tractors with a death wish, I was already committed. Mud splattered up the side of the hire car like a Jackson Pollock painting, and I spent a good five minutes doing a seventeen-point turn next to a very judgmental-looking sheep. Not my finest hour, and certainly not the serene arrival I had pictured for my spring escape to Drenthe.

I had chosen April quite deliberately. Not the obvious Dutch holiday slot, which was rather the point. I wanted that liminal season when the bulb fields are stirring but the summer crowds remain mercifully absent. What I had not fully accounted for was how this particular spring was behaving more like an extended winter with occasional mood swings. The morning I left Groningen Airport, the sky was doing that peculiar Dutch thing where it cannot quite decide between brilliant sunshine and horizontal drizzle. I packed for both, which meant I packed for neither, and spent the drive constantly adjusting the heating.

The Norg itself materialised through a tunnel of still-bare trees, their branches not yet trusting the season enough to produce leaves. It was a proper Drenthe farmhouse conversion, the sort that makes you immediately conscious of how much noise your wheeled suitcase produces on gravel. The thatched roof sat low and patient, having clearly seen many springs come and go with considerably more grace than I was managing. My host appeared from around the side, carrying a wheelbarrow with what I initially thought was firewood but turned out to be bulbs waiting to be planted. "You are early for the garden," she said, though not unkindly. I could not tell if this was observation or gentle reproach.

The interior warmth hit me like a wall after the stubborn chill outside. The kitchen still carried that particular scent of old wood and recently-stoked stove that no amount of modern renovation can fully replicate. I made tea with slightly shaking hands, still recovering from the driving ordeal, and stood at the window watching the light do its seasonal dance across the flat fields. Drenthe's landscape makes you work for your beauty. It does not offer mountains or drama. Instead it gives you vast sky and the gradual revelation of subtle colour, the kind that April teases rather than delivers.

I had planned walks for the afternoon, routes through the nearby Drents-Friese Wold that I had mapped with enthusiasm in London. The reality was that I put on every layer I possessed and made it approximately four hundred yards before the wind, which apparently had not received the spring memo, sent me back for a hat I had foolishly decided not to bring. The paths were that particular April combination of muddy and promising, last year's leaves still clinging damply while the first brave green shoots pushed through. Everything felt held in suspension, neither one season nor the next.

That evening, with the stove properly mastered and the darkness arriving later than my British instincts expected, I sat with a local beer and accepted my limitations. The mishap with the Sat Nav had set a tone, certainly, but perhaps an appropriate one. April in Drenthe does not reward the rigid planner. It rewards those who can appreciate the almost, the not-quite-yet, the landscape slowly clearing its throat before the full performance of summer. I had come seeking spring, and found instead something more honest: the process of becoming.
