Three Italian farmers materialised from nowhere, because apparently that's what happens in Umbria, and within minutes they'd winched us out with a rope that looked older than the hills themselves. I understood roughly none of the cheerful insults they directed at my driving, but I caught "inglese" several times, delivered with the universal head-shake of someone who has seen this before.

We finally rolled up to the cottage as golden afternoon light was doing that thing it does in Umbria, the thing that makes you understand why painters never shut up about this region. The property sat among rolling hills with views that immediately made the ditch incident feel like a necessary pilgrimage. My daughter ran straight to the pool, shoes still on, while my wife and I stood on the terrace with our bags at our feet and simply breathed. The air smelled of cypress and something herby I couldn't identify, probably something growing in the garden that I'd later fail to keep alive at home.

Inside, the place had that satisfying solidity of old stone walls and terracotta floors, cool even in summer. The kitchen was clearly designed for people who actually cook on holiday, with a proper oven and enough pans to suggest the owners had faith in our abilities we probably didn't deserve. My son discovered the outdoor barbecue and began planning elaborate meals he'd lose interest in after one attempt. I found the washing machine and felt an embarrassing surge of domestic relief.

What struck me most, wandering those first few hours, was the quiet. Not silence exactly, but the right kind of noise. Birds, distant tractors, the pool filter doing its steady work. No traffic, no urgency.
