I had been driving for what felt like three days when I finally realised the sat nav had taken me on a scenic route through Tuscany that I definitely had not requested. There I was, crawling up yet another gravel track in a Fiat 500 that was not built for gravel tracks, convinced I was about to discover a new and entirely unwanted definition of "off-road parking." The mishap came shortly after, when I confidently reversed into what I assumed was the driveway of my holiday let in Umbertide, only to be greeted by a very confused Italian gentleman in a dressing gown who emerged from his front door with two dogs and a look that said, "You are not my cousin from Bologna." I had missed the turning by one house. One house. The shame still lingers.

When I finally located the correct property, tucked among the rolling hills that make Umbria look like someone has painted a Renaissance backdrop and forgotten to tell anyone it is real life, I sat in the car for a good thirty seconds just breathing. The journey from Perugia Airport had taken the better part of two hours, thanks to my unscheduled detour and my subsequent wrong-driveway incident, but the view from the terrace made every wrong turn feel like part of some grander plan I was not clever enough to have designed myself.

The house itself had that particular stillness you only find in places where the loudest sound is a distant tractor and your own thoughts. I pushed open the door, half-expecting the usual holiday-rental smell of industrial cleaner and regret, but instead found something far more disarming: it smelled like woodsmoke and rosemary, as if the building itself had been cooking something modest and delicious in my absence. The kitchen was simple, properly simple, with terracotta tiles that had clearly been walked on by several generations of feet before mine. I ran my hand along the countertop and immediately felt the slight unevenness that told me this was not a showroom. This was a place where people had actually lived, had probably argued about pasta water, had definitely opened wine without bothering to find the proper corkscrew.

I dumped my bags with the theatrical exhaustion of someone who had done almost nothing physical for six hours but felt entitled to dramatics anyway. The sitting room had heavy wooden beams across the ceiling, darkened with age, and windows that framed the countryside like deliberate paintings. I found myself doing that thing where you stand in the middle of a room turning slowly, trying to take it all in, realising you are grinning like an idiot and not particularly caring.

The garden sloped away from the house toward olive trees that looked older than most countries. I could see the town of Umbertide itself in the distance, the medieval tower rising above the rooftops, close enough to feel connected to something but far enough to pretend I was a hermit with excellent taste. A lizard darted across the terrace and disappeared into a crack in the wall with the confidence of someone who pays no rent and answers to no one.

By evening I had accomplished almost nothing beyond opening a bottle of local wine and watching the light change across the valley. I had not unpacked properly. I had not found the nearest shop. I had not even worked out how to operate the coffee maker, which appeared to require some form of engineering qualification. But I had already decided something important, sitting there with my feet up and my dignity still bruised from the wrong-driveway encounter: this was going to be the sort of holiday where doing very little felt like doing exactly enough.
