About Umbria
I'd been dreaming of a proper Italian escape for months, so when I finally booked a week at a farmhouse near Gualdo Cattaneo in Umbria, I was practically bouncing in my seat all the way from Perugia airport. The hire car was far too small for my ambitions, a Fiat 500 that made me feel like a giant, but the rolling green hills soon had me grinning like a fool. Then came the mishap. Relying on Google Maps with the confidence of a man who cannot read Italian road signs, I turned down what I thought was a charming country lane and found myself wedged between two olive trees, completely unable to reverse. I sat there for twenty minutes, sweating, until a tiny Fiat Panda appeared behind me and out climbed Giovanni.

Giovanni must have been seventy-five, wearing a flat cap that looked older than both of us combined. He did not speak a word of English. I do not speak Italian beyond ordering coffee and apologising. Yet somehow, through elaborate hand gestures and him literally drawing a map on my dusty bonnet with his finger, we established that I was an idiot and he would guide me out. He walked alongside my car for half a mile, stopping traffic with imperious waves, until we reached the proper turning. His parting gift was a bag of walnuts from his pocket, already shelled, which I ate guiltily at the farmhouse while accepting I would never be competent abroad.

The property itself was everything I had hoped, stone walls thick enough to survive centuries, a pool that caught the afternoon sun, and a kitchen that smelled permanently of someone else's excellent cooking. But it was the people who made that week unforgettable. Each morning I walked to the village for coffee, and each morning I found the same three men outside Bar Centrale, playing cards with the intensity of professional athletes. The youngest, Marco, spoke enough English to translate my fumbling attempts at conversation. He introduced me to his uncle Nino, who had opinions about everything and expressed them at considerable volume, particularly regarding my football shirt. "English! Always losing!" he would shout, then buy me another espresso. I never quite worked out if he was being friendly or hostile. Probably both. It is a very Italian skill.

One evening, the owner of the farmhouse, a formidable woman called Luisa, invited me to taste her homemade strangozzi. She had the build and manner of someone who had spent decades commanding respect from builders, farmers, and foolish tourists alike. She watched me eat with unsettling focus, then announced that I held my fork like a child. For the next hour, she instructed me on proper pasta technique, which apparently involves wrist movements I had never considered. I have never been so thoroughly schooled while genuinely enjoying myself. Her husband, Enzo, said nothing throughout, merely smiled into his wine, clearly a man who had learned when to remain silent decades ago.

The butcher, I never learned his name, communicated entirely through pointing and exaggerated facial expressions. He sold me sausages by miming a pig's life, death, and subsequent deliciousness. I bought far more than I needed because the performance was so compelling. The baker, a tiny woman who opened at six each morning, remembered my order by day three and would have it waiting, muttering about English stomachs needing constant filling.

By the end of the week, I was still hopeless at Italian, still holding my fork slightly wrong, and still unable to navigate without technological assistance. But I had been laughed at, corrected, fed, and adopted by strangers who owed me absolutely nothing. That is the trick of places like Gualdo Cattaneo, I think. The landscape is beautiful, the food extraordinary, but the people are the ones who make you feel briefly, imperfectly, wonderfully at home.
