About Umbria
I have never been so pleased to see a stone wall in my life. After six hours of driving from Rome, two wrong turns near Todi, and one spectacular argument with a sat nav that clearly fancied itself as a rally co-driver, we finally spotted the turn-off for Gualdo Cattaneo. The mishap came thirty seconds later, when I confidently reversed our hire car into what I assumed was the property entrance and found myself nose-to-nose with a very unimpressed local in a Fiat Panda who was simply trying to reach his olive grove. Much frantic gesticulating and apologetic waving later, I established that our actual entrance was the next gate along, hidden behind a curtain of cypress trees that had apparently been practising their camouflage skills for decades.

The proper driveway crunched satisfyingly under our wheels, all gravel and anticipation, before the house revealed itself properly. It sat there like something from a half-remembered dream of Italy, all honey-coloured stone and terracotta roof tiles that had faded to the colour of old pennies. I killed the engine and just listened. Nothing. Or rather, the particular nothing of the countryside: distant sheep bells, some enthusiastic crickets, and what I eventually identified as a cockerel with opinions about our arrival.

Stepping out, the heat hit differently here. Rome had been sticky, urban, relentless. This was warm air that actually moved, carrying smells of lavender and dry earth and something herby I could not place. My partner immediately began photographing a lizard on the wall, as if we had never seen a reptile before. We had, of course, but context changes everything. A lizard in a Birmingham garden is a mild inconvenience. A lizard on your holiday villa in Umbria is practically a welcoming committee.

The key was where the owner said it would be, in a small metal box with a combination that I managed to get wrong three times despite having written it down. Inside, the house smelled of clean stone and disuse, that particular holiday-rental scent that always makes me slightly melancholy for other people's summers. The kitchen was vast and slightly intimidating, with a fireplace you could practically stand in and a table that suggested we ought to be eight people planning a feast rather than two tired travellers contemplating supermarket pasta.

I wandered through to the terrace while my partner investigated the bedrooms, and that was when the gentle self-reflection ambushed me. I found myself standing at a wrought-iron table, looking out over rolling hills that folded into each other like green fabric, and I thought about how often I race through arrivals. The checking-in, the unpacking, the frantic need to validate the booking by immediately doing something. Here, with that view and that silence, I felt the unusual sensation of having already arrived simply by standing still. No activity required. No performance of holiday-making.

My partner emerged to report that one bedroom had a slightly wonky shutter and the other had what she described as "an extremely committed spider," so we chose the spider and returned to the terrace with wine we had bought in Orvieto. The sun lowered itself towards the hills with theatrical slowness. Somewhere, that cockerel fell silent. We did not speak much. There seemed little to add to what was simply there, waiting for us to catch up with it.

Tomorrow we would explore properly, find the local shops, perhaps brave the pool that looked suspiciously cold. But for that first evening, we just sat with our slightly warm white wine and our exhaustion and our unexpected contentment, watching the light change across stone that had stood for centuries before we arrived and would remain long after we left, indifferent to our small dramas with sat navs and driveways and spiders going about their business in the corner of a room we had borrowed for a week.
