About Umbria
The property sits just outside Assisi proper, far enough that you feel properly rural but close enough that the basilica's bells drift over in the evening like a reminder that civilisation still exists. I dumped my bags with the enthusiasm of a woman who had just survived forty minutes of Italian country roads with nothing but instinct and a prayer. The key was under a terracotta pot, because of course it was. Nothing says "welcome to Umbria" like trusting a stranger with your terracotta. I had planned to unpack properly. Make a cup of tea, perhaps admire the view from the terrace that the website had made rather a big deal about. Instead, I wandered. This is what happens when you arrive somewhere with no functioning map and a stubborn refusal to ask for directions twice. The shepherd had suffered enough. The lane behind the property looked promising. Narrow, unmarked, the sort of track that sensible people avoid. I have never been sensible. Within ten minutes the olive groves had swallowed me whole. Not literally, though at one point a low branch came close to making that point for me. The trees here are ancient things, twisted and silver-barked, planted by hands long since returned to the Umbrian soil. You feel it walking among them. The quiet is different from English countryside quiet. Thicker, somehow. More deliberate. I found the well by accident. Stone-capped, overgrown with something purple I could not name, water visible far below like a promise. No sign, no information board, no gift shop. Just a well that someone had once needed, now left to the curiosity of idiots with dead phones. I sat on the edge longer than I intended. There is something humbling about accidental discoveries. You cannot claim them. They simply happen to you. The path continued because paths always do when you are not paying proper attention. It opened eventually into a small clearing where someone had once cultivated vegetables. The rows were still visible, though now populated by wild fennel and poppies. A collapsed stone wall suggested a boundary, a claim staked and eventually surrendered. I thought about the labour of it. The hauling of water from that well, the tending through Umbrian summers that turn fierce by July. How easily it all returns to itself when we stop insisting. I found my way back by following the downward slope and the smell of woodsmoke. A farmer burning cuttings, watching me emerge from his olives with the resigned expression of someone who has seen many lost tourists. He did not speak. I did not speak. We shared a nod of mutual acknowledgment - me for my trespass, him for his tolerance. The terrace was everything promised. I finally made that cup of tea as the light turned golden and Assisi's bells began their evening conversation. My phone charged eventually, and with it came the temptation to look up what I had found, to name and categorise and pin. I resisted. Some things keep their power only when they remain slightly mysterious, gifts from a day that began with a wrong turn and ended with something I had not known I was looking for. |
