About Umbria
I should have known the sat nav was plotting against me the moment it sent us down a track that grew narrower with every bend, until we were essentially driving through someone's olive grove. My partner, ever the optimist, kept saying, "It'll open up in a minute," while I gripped the door handle and prayed we wouldn't meet a tractor coming the other way. We did meet a tractor. The farmer looked thoroughly unimpressed, gestured at our roof box with the kind of weary resignation that suggested he'd seen plenty of British families in hire cars before, and reversed fifty yards up the lane with the practiced ease of a man who'd been reversing his entire life.

Three-point turns in thirty-degree heat do not bring out the best in anyone. By the time we finally spotted the stone walls of the Acquasparta property, I'd worked up a sweat that had nothing to do with the Italian sunshine and everything to do with marital diplomacy.

But then you step out of the car, and the whole journey melts away. There was a proper old stone farmhouse with terracotta pots spilling geraniums, and beyond it nothing but rolling hills patched with woodland and the occasional flash of a distant village on a ridge. The kind of view that makes you feel slightly ridiculous for having stressed about a bit of gravel track. Our children had already vanished round the back, drawn by the promise of a pool they'd spotted on the website, and I could hear their shrieks of discovery echoing off the walls.

Inside, the place had that perfect balance of rustic and actually functional. Exposed beams, tiled floors that stay deliciously cool underfoot, and a kitchen that looked like it had hosted decades of proper Italian cooking. I immediately felt the pressure to produce something impressive with the local ingredients we'd passed on the way, despite being someone whose signature dish at home is pasta with whatever jar of sauce was on offer. There's something about a farmhouse kitchen that brings out delusions of culinary competence.

The first evening, we didn't bother with any grand plans. Someone wandered down to the village and returned with bread still warm from the oven, some pecorino, and tomatoes that actually tasted of something. We sat on the terrace with a bottle of local wine, watching the light change over the hills, while the kids splashed about until their fingers went wrinkly. A gecko appeared on the wall, surveyed us with what I chose to interpret as approval, and darted off about its business.

I found myself thinking, as I often do on the first night of a proper break, about how rarely we do this at home. Not the Italy part specifically, though that helps, but the deliberate slowing down. No itinerary, no ticking off sights, just the pleasure of being somewhere that feels rooted in its own rhythm. The pool, the terrace, the view, the simple ritual of figuring out which local shop sells the best gelato. That's the whole point of a place like this, isn't it? Not to conquer Umbria, but to let it settle around you like the evening warmth.

Of course, by morning I'd already planned three different day trips in my head, because old habits die hard. But for that first evening, I genuinely managed to do nothing at all, and it felt like the most productive thing I'd accomplished in months.
