I have never been more grateful to see a gravel driveway in my entire life. Seven hours, two flights, one hire car that smelled aggressively of pine air freshener, and a sat-nav that insisted on calling every road "Via Something-or-Other" had brought me to a winding lane just east of Arezzo. I was triumphant. I was victorious. I was, as it turned out, parked in entirely the wrong property and waving cheerfully at a very confused Italian farmer.

The mishap was small but perfectly timed. In my defence, all Tuscan farmhouses look roughly identical after prolonged motorway hypnosis. Same honeyed stone, same terracotta roof tiles, same obligatory cypress tree standing to attention like a green exclamation mark. I had marched up to this particular villa with the misplaced confidence of a man who had not slept properly since Gatwick, hauling my suitcase across a courtyard and attempting to open what I believed was my holiday home for the week. The key did not work. The farmer, who emerged from a barn with a wheelbarrow and the patient expression of someone who had witnessed this exact scene many times before, gestured vaguely further up the hill. I retreated with the theatrical embarrassment of a pantomime villain, bowing slightly as I went. He did not laugh, which somehow made it worse.

The correct property, when I finally found it, revealed itself gradually. A final bend in the lane, a glimpse of a private swimming pool glinting through olive trees, and there it was: a restored stone farmhouse with the sort of unhurried character that no amount of careful interior design can truly manufacture. I stood in the courtyard for a moment, still slightly pink from my earlier performance, and simply breathed. The air carried something I can only describe as green: cut grass, tomato vines, distant woodsmoke from a neighbour's chimney. My shoulders dropped approximately three inches.

The first exploration of the grounds became less a purposeful tour and more a slow drift. The pool area sat on a slight terrace, fringed by lavender that had been left to do its own pleasingly chaotic thing. A covered terrace with outdoor furniture suggested the kind of lazy lunches that would inevitably stretch into dinners. I found myself talking aloud to no one, commenting on the view across the Valdichiana valley as if presenting a television programme. "And here we observe the rolling hills," I murmured, "notable for their rollingness." The isolation was not total - a neighbouring farmhouse sat perhaps two hundred metres distant - but it felt sufficiently private for comfortable solitude.

Inside, the farmhouse delivered that particular Tuscan combination of rustic beams and practical modernity without either element apologising for the other. The kitchen, I noted with relief, contained an actual coffee maker and not one of those intimidating lever machines that require engineering qualifications. Bedrooms occupied the upper floor, their windows framing views that made my wrong-turn waving incident feel like necessary narrative setup. I unpacked with the methodical slowness of someone who has nowhere to be, which was precisely the point.

By evening, I had established myself on that covered terrace with a glass of something local and red, watching the light change across the valley in that deliberate, unhurried manner that Tuscany seems to have patented. The farmer's property was just visible below, and I raised my glass in silent, sheepish apology. He could not see me, but the gesture felt important. Some arrivals demand small humiliations before the proper relaxation can begin.
