I have never been so relieved to see a sign for "Viddalba" in my entire life. Three flights, one questionable hire car, and a sat-nav that clearly fancied itself as a rally co-driver later, we finally crawled into this little corner of northern Sardinia. The mishap? Oh, that came at Olbia airport, where I confidently marched to the wrong car hire desk, argued with the poor man for a solid five minutes about a booking I had never actually made, then discovered my actual reservation was two doors down with a company whose name I had entirely misread. My partner just stood there, slowly shaking his head, already accepting this was how our holiday would go.

The drive to Viddalba took us through cork oak forests and past fields that looked almost too golden to be real. I kept pointing at things, shouting "Look!" like a child on a motorway, until my other half threatened to confiscate my sunglasses. The roads narrowed, the sat-nav grew increasingly hysterical, and then suddenly there it was: our little holiday home, tucked behind a low wall with bougainvillea doing its best to take over entirely.

Stepping out of that car was like walking into a different sort of time altogether. The heat hit us properly for the first time, thick and warm and smelling of dry earth and something herbal I could not quite name. I stood there with my ridiculous wheelie case, suddenly aware that I had packed three novels and no actual sense of how to relax. The owner appeared, wonderfully unhurried, and showed us around in a manner that suggested she had never once in her life checked a watch. The pool glimmered at us through the trees. I felt my shoulders drop somewhere around my knees.

That first evening, we did almost nothing. We sat on the terrace with bread and cheese and a bottle of Vermentino that cost less than a London sandwich. The swallows went absolutely bonkers overhead, diving and chattering until the light finally gave up around half nine. I had brought my phone out, meaning to photograph everything, but it stayed in my pocket. Some things you just want to keep for yourself, unfiltered and slightly blurry around the edges.

The days since have settled into a rhythm so gentle it barely qualifies as rhythm at all. Morning coffee on the terrace, watching the light change on the hills. A slow wander down to the village for more bread than two people reasonably need. Afternoons by the pool with one of those novels, reading perhaps ten pages before dozing off with the book collapsed on my chest like a small tent. My partner has taken to identifying birds with an app, announcing them with the satisfaction of someone who has never before cared about birds and now cannot stop.

We did drive to the coast once, to a little beach near Isola Rossa where the water was that impossible Sardinian blue. Stayed perhaps two hours, got sandy, came back. That was enough. The real discovery has been how little "enough" actually requires. No itineraries, no must-sees, no rushing to beat the crowds. Just heat and time and the occasional cold beer.

Yesterday I caught myself staring at a lizard on the wall for what must have been ten minutes. I have no idea what I was thinking about. That feels like the whole point somehow.
