About Sardinia
I had been dreaming about Sardinia for months, so when the plane finally touched down at Cagliari Elmas Airport, I was already half-asleep and fully delirious. Three flights, one questionable airport panini, and a hire car that smelled faintly of fish later, I was navigating the winding roads toward Quartu Sant Elena with the kind of blind optimism that only a truly exhausted traveller can muster. My phone died precisely three minutes from the property. Of course it did. I had taken a screenshot of the directions, which is about as useful as a chocolate teapot when your screen is blacker than midnight. I ended up circling the same roundabout four times, each lap bringing me face-to-face with a increasingly judgmental-looking old man on a scooter who clearly thought I was having some kind of episode.

The mishap that really crowned my arrival, though, was the gate. The holiday home had one of those modern key safes, and I was so proud of myself for actually remembering the code that I completely failed to notice the small pedestrian entrance right next to the main driveway. I spent a solid ten minutes trying to wrestle my enormous suitcase through a gap clearly designed for a bicycle, not a middle-aged man who had packed enough books for a month-long siege. At one point I was genuinely wedged, half in and half out, contemplating whether this was simply my life now. A neighbour eventually appeared with what I can only describe as sympathetic amusement and pointed out the obvious. I laughed, she laughed, and I made a mental note that exhaustion makes me approximately forty percent less intelligent.

Stepping inside for the first time felt like walking into a different world entirely. The cool tile floors were an absolute blessing after the heat of the journey, and the living space opened out toward a terrace that framed the Mediterranean light in a way that made me forget, momentarily, that I had just been defeated by a gate. The kitchen smelled faintly of lemon cleaner and possibility, the sort of space that makes you believe you might actually cook proper meals rather than survive on bread and cheese as usual. I ran my hand along the counter like a complete tourist, already picturing morning coffee with the doors thrown open.

The bedroom was simple and uncluttered, which I appreciated more than I expected. After months of city noise, the silence felt almost theatrical, as if someone had forgotten to turn the sound back on. I kicked off my shoes and walked barefoot onto the terrace, and that was when the tiredness really hit me, not the frantic airport kind but something slower and deeper. The garden had that particular Sardinian mix of cultivated and wild, rosemary and lavender giving way to scrub and the distant glimpse of blue that promised the sea was not far.

I sat on one of the terrace chairs, the plastic still warm from the afternoon sun, and let myself simply stop moving for the first time in days. The old man on the scooter passed by again, and this time I waved with the cheerful shamelessness of someone who has accepted their own ridiculousness. He did not wave back, but I choose to believe he was smiling behind his helmet.

That first evening I did nothing ambitious at all. I found a local shop for bread and pecorino, opened a bottle of cannonau that cost less than a London coffee, and ate on the terrace as the light faded into something soft and golden. The mishaps of arrival had already become funny stories rather than frustrations, which is perhaps the truest test of whether a place will suit you. I went to bed early, slept better than I had in weeks, and woke to birdsong and the realisation that I had absolutely no idea what time it was and absolutely no intention of finding out.
