About Sardinia
I have never been so relieved to see a dry stone wall in my life. After a flight to Olbia, a hire car that smelled faintly of fish, and forty minutes of increasingly narrow roads that had me questioning every life choice that led to this moment, I finally spotted the marker for Localita Mascarartu. The relief lasted approximately eight seconds, which is how long it took me to realise I had just driven straight past the turning and into a small grove of olive trees.

The reversing bit was undignified. The local dog, a scruffy thing with the judgemental eyes of a retired headmaster, watched the entire performance without blinking. I emerged sweating, dusty, and somehow with a twig in my hair despite never opening the window. Some holidays begin with glamour. Mine began with agricultural embarrassment.

But then I climbed out of the car properly, and the whole ridiculous journey fell away. The villa sat there like it had grown from the hillside itself, all warm stone and terracotta, surrounded by cork oaks and the kind of silence that makes you aware of your own breathing. Somewhere distant, a goat had opinions. Bees moved lazily between wild rosemary. I stood there with my ridiculous twig and felt something in my shoulders actually drop.

The first morning, I did absolutely nothing. This sounds unremarkable, but for someone who treats relaxation as a competitive sport, it felt almost transgressive. I took coffee to the terrace and watched the light change over the maquis scrubland. I read three pages of a novel, put it down, and stared at a lizard for what felt like an hour. The lizard, I should note, was far more industrious than me, darting about with evident purpose. I admired this without feeling any need to match its energy.

The pool became my headquarters for operations of extreme lethargy. Floating on my back, I could see nothing but blue sky and the occasional hawk circling. The water was that perfect temperature where you forget you are in it, becoming simply a body suspended between elements. My biggest decision was whether to move to the shade at eleven or push through until lunch. I pushed through. The sun won. I napped face-down on a towel like a beached creature, drooling slightly, entirely content.

Gentle exploration became my only exertion. I wandered down to the nearby village one evening, perhaps twenty minutes of ambling along a track scented with myrtle and cistus. The bar had three tables outside and an old man who nodded at me as if we had an arrangement. I ordered a mirto and watched children kick a football against a wall with the rhythmic patience of a meditation practice. No one hurried. No one seemed to consider hurrying. I walked back in the amber light, slightly tipsy, slightly sun-touched, feeling pleasantly irrelevant to the world's concerns.

Some evenings I cooked badly with local ingredients, making a mess of fregola because I refused to follow instructions. Other evenings I drove the five minutes to a trattoria and let professionals handle it, eating grilled fish that tasted of actual sea and drinking Vermentino that cost less than a London sandwich. Both approaches felt correct. Both ended with me on the terrace, watching stars emerge in quantities that seemed almost aggressive, as if the sky were showing off.

I had arrived thinking I would hike, perhaps kayak, definitely see things and do things and accumulate experiences. Instead I accumulated hours of nothing much, and found them precious beyond measure. There is a particular joy in surrendering to smallness, in becoming a creature of simple appetites: shade when hot, sun when cool, cold water, warm bread, the next chapter, the next breath.

On my final morning, I packed with the reluctance of a child leaving a party. The same dog watched me load the car, though this time its expression suggested faint approval, or perhaps mere indifference. I did not drive into any olive trees on departure, which felt like growth of a sort. But I did stop at the top of the lane, look back at the villa settling into its hillside, and make a silent promise to return to doing nothing somewhere soon.
