About Puglia
I should have known the holiday was going to be interesting when I tried to unlock the wrong trullo.

We had driven down from Bari airport in a hire car that smelled faintly of air freshener and regret, winding through olive groves that looked like they had been there since before anyone thought to write things down. The sat nav had given up somewhere near Martina Franca, leaving us to navigate by instinct and the occasional hand-painted sign. Cisternino appeared eventually, its whitewashed old town perched on a hill like someone had dropped a pile of sugar cubes and decided to call it architecture.

The property was down a narrow lane, surrounded by dry stone walls and those funny little conical roofs that make you feel like you've wandered onto a film set. I was tired, slightly carsick, and absolutely convinced I knew which gate was ours. I did not. An elderly gentleman appeared from behind a lemon tree and watched me jiggle my key in his lock for a full minute before clearing his throat. He said nothing, just raised one eyebrow, and I have never retreated faster in my life.

Our actual place was two doors down, hidden behind an overgrown hedge that had clearly never met a pair of shears. The key turned, the gate creaked open, and there it was: a proper Puglian masseria conversion, all thick walls and shady courtyards, with a pool that caught the afternoon light like someone had spilled a tray of gold coins.

I dumped my bags and did what any sensible person would do. I got lost on purpose.

Cisternino's old town is a maze of alleyways and sudden staircases, the kind of place where you turn left for bread and emerge twenty minutes later wondering which century you've landed in. I found a tiny piazza with a single bench and a cat that looked like it owned the freehold. I found a bakery doing focaccia barese still warm from the oven, the crust blistered and salty, the inside soft enough to make you close your eyes. I found a shop selling nothing but olive wood spoons, run by a woman who explained the grain patterns like she was introducing her own children.

The real magic happened when I stopped trying to find anything at all. I took a wrong turn somewhere near the Torre Civica, following a narrow passage that seemed to lead nowhere, and stumbled into a vegetable garden someone had planted in the ruins of an old stable. Tomatoes rioting up a crumbling wall. A fig tree growing straight out of a pile of rubble. An actual rooster, looking at me like I was the one out of place.

That evening I sat by the pool with a glass of primitivo, watching swallows dart between the trulli roofs. My phone had died hours ago. I had no photographs of the garden, no name for the bakery, no way of finding that piazza again without another afternoon of happy wandering. It felt like the first proper holiday I'd had in years, the kind where you collect moments instead of checklists.

The old gentleman from the wrong trullo waved at me the next morning as I passed his gate. I waved back, slightly sheepish. Some mistakes, it turns out, are just directions in disguise.
