About Piedmont
We eventually found the proper road, winding up through beech woods towards Bee, a tiny village perched above Lake Maggiore's western shore. The last stretch is properly steep, switchbacking past stone houses with geraniums spilling from window boxes, and I will admit to feeling rather pleased with myself by that point. The goat incident was already becoming one of those stories. Albagnano di Bee itself sits in a converted rural building, the sort of place where rough plaster walls and timber beams have been left honestly exposed rather than stripped back to some imagined authenticity. Our apartment opened onto a shared terrace with views that genuinely stopped me mid-stride. The lake lay below, hazy blue in the afternoon heat, with the Borromean Islands just visible in the distance. Beyond that, the Lombardy shore rose in a soft, indistinct line. I stood there with our bags still in hand, slightly ridiculous, until my daughter nudged past to claim the bedroom with the better view. The kitchen was compact but properly equipped, not one of those holiday let setups where you discover too late that the only knife couldn't butter toast. We had brought provisions from Stresa - this being Piedmont, that meant fresh tajarin pasta, local cheese, and a bottle of Gattinara that I had selected with more enthusiasm than expertise. That first evening, we cooked simply and ate on the terrace as the light faded, watching swallows dart above the olive trees. Someone in a neighbouring apartment was playing an accordion, slightly inexpertly, and nobody seemed to mind. What struck me most that first day was the particular quality of the quiet. Not silence exactly - there were church bells, distant traffic from the lake road, the occasional shout of children from the village above - but a kind of spaciousness that my city-dulled ears needed time to adjust to. I found myself speaking more softly without meaning to, as if loudness would somehow breach an unwritten contract. The pool, we discovered the following morning, is set on a lower terrace among lavender and rosemary bushes. It is not large, but it catches the sun perfectly and the view from the water is absurdly cinematic. I did my usual thirty lengths of chaotic front crawl while my daughter perfected her bombing technique and my partner read a novel with the determined focus of someone who has spent too many holidays not reading novels. By our third day, the routine had established itself with the gentle inevitability that makes cottage holidays what they are. Morning swim, slow breakfast with proper coffee, then either a wander down to the lake or simply pottering about the village. Bee itself has little beyond a church, a bar, and spectacular views, but Stresa's bustle is only fifteen minutes down the hill when you want it. I kept thinking about that wrong turn, the goat, my stubborn refusal to admit the sat nav had failed. There is something about arriving somewhere properly after a minor mishap that makes the destination feel earned rather than merely reached. Standing on that terrace with a glass of something local, watching the last light catch the lake, I felt the particular satisfaction of having found my way to exactly where I needed to be. |
