About Northern Italian Lakes
I have never been so grateful to see a washing machine in my entire life. But I am getting ahead of myself.

The journey to Caprino Veronese started with what I can only describe as misplaced optimism. I had looked at the map, seen that it was roughly two hours from Milan Malpensa, and thought: lovely, a scenic drive through the Italian lakes. What I had failed to account for was my own spectacular talent for getting lost in car parks. Three hours, one very tense roundabout negotiation in Brescia, and a small weep in a service station later, I finally found myself winding up through the hills above Lake Garda, clutching the steering wheel like it owed me money.

The mishap, when it came, was almost laughably small. I had stopped at a petrol station just outside Desenzano to buy water and stretch my legs. In my exhaustion, I managed to leave my phone on the roof of the hire car, then drive for nearly ten minutes before it slid off and bounced into the verge. I reversed in a panic, expecting shattered glass and ruined holiday. Instead I found it sitting in a patch of wildflowers, still somehow playing a podcast about medieval cheese-making. I laughed so hard I nearly cried. There is something deeply humbling about technology surviving your own stupidity better than you deserve.

By the time I reached the property, the light was doing that extraordinary thing it does in this part of the world, turning the lake below into something between silver and bronze. The house sat among olive trees and cypress, with a terrace that looked down towards Garda's western shore. I stood there with my ridiculous still-working phone in one hand and a warm bottle of water in the other, and felt the particular kind of tired that makes everything seem slightly unreal.

The first thing that struck me was the smell. Not the manufactured scent of hotels, but something greener and older. Olive leaf, dry stone, the faint sweetness of jasmine somewhere out of sight. The house itself was simple in the best way, the sort of place that does not try to impress you but somehow does anyway. Terracotta floors that stayed cool even in late afternoon. Wooden shutters that actually functioned, that you could prop open with a stick and let the air move through. A kitchen that looked like someone actually cooked in it, with pans that had seen decades of use and a coffee pot that had probably witnessed several generations of family arguments.

I unpacked badly, as I always do. Threw things onto chairs, left my case half-open in the hallway, could not find the tea bags I was certain I had packed. It did not matter. I made a cup of something hot from a jar I found in the cupboard, carried it out to the terrace, and watched the last of the light disappear behind the mountains across the lake. Somewhere below, a dog barked. A scooter puttered along a road I could not see. The air cooled quickly, that sharp shift you get in hill towns, and I realised I had not thought about work, or emails, or the various small failures of the journey, for at least four minutes.

That is the thing about arriving somewhere properly, I think. Not the Instagram moment, not the perfect view. The moment when your shoulders drop without you asking them to, when the thing you have been holding in your chest finally lets go. I sat there in the half-dark, still slightly damp from the stress of the drive, and felt something like peace settle over me. Or perhaps it was just exhaustion. Either way, it felt like a gift.

The washing machine, when I found it the next morning, was in a small utility room off the kitchen. I had not noticed it the night before, too busy being dramatic about olive trees and golden light. But there it was, utterly ordinary, utterly perfect. I laughed again, remembering my phone in the wildflowers. Some holidays give you grand adventures. Others give you a working washing machine and a terrace at dusk, and somehow that is exactly enough.
