About Northern Italian Lakes
We eventually found the proper road, winding upward through beech woods that thickened and darkened as we climbed. The Northern Italian Lakes have this trick of revealing themselves slowly. You do not arrive at these places so much as unwrap them. Around one bend, then another, the trees parted and there it was: our stone house perched on the hillside, looking out over a slice of Lago Maggiore that glittered like someone had scattered broken glass across blue silk. The owners had left the key in a rusted metal box that required the dexterity of a safecracker to open. I failed twice. My partner succeeded, but said nothing, merely raising an eyebrow in my direction. The door swung inward with a satisfying creak, and we stepped into cool stone-flagged rooms that smelled faintly of lavender and old timber. High ceilings, simple furniture, shutters thrown open to catch any whisper of breeze. I immediately wanted to sit down and do absolutely nothing for several hours. But the weather had other ideas. We had arrived in late May expecting mild walking conditions, perhaps a light cardigan for the evenings. Instead, Northern Italy was experiencing an early heatwave that the locals kept describing with shrugs and the word anormale. By four o'clock, the terrace tiles were too hot for bare feet. My ambitious plan for a long coastal hike that afternoon dissolved like sugar in espresso. We adapted, as one must. The following dawn, we rose at six, made coffee in the small kitchen with its pleasingly wonky drawers, and set out while the air still carried night's coolness. The path from Albagnano di Bee descends through chestnut woodland toward the lake, and in that early hour everything felt borrowed and secret. Sunlight filtered green through new leaves. Somewhere invisible, a cuckoo called with mechanical persistence. By eight, we had reached the waterfront near Bee itself, watching the morning light climb the opposite shore where Swiss mountains sat pale and distant. We walked the flat coastal trail toward Lido di Ghirla, passing small beaches where fishermen already tended nets and early swimmers tested the water with theatrical shivering. The heat built steadily. By ten, we were seeking shade beneath oleander bushes, sharing warm water from our bottles and laughing at how quickly our grand hiking plans had compressed into these stolen morning hours. This became our rhythm. Rise early, walk while the world remained tolerable, retreat to the house by midday like sensible creatures. Afternoons found us on the shaded terrace with books we barely read, watching heat shimmer rise from the slopes below. Sometimes I napped in the hammock strung between two ancient trees, waking confused and sweaty with a dead arm. On our final morning, we pushed further along the coast toward the point where the lake narrows, the path climbing slightly through olive terraces. The heat caught us earlier than expected. We turned back, not defeated exactly, but negotiated with. Walking back, I thought about how holidays rarely follow their scripts, and how this was not a disappointment but simply the shape of this particular trip. We had walked in mornings, surrendered to afternoons, and found something unplanned in between. That evening, we sat on the terrace with local Nebbiolo, watching the sun descend behind the mountains and the lake turn through shades of amber and rose. My phone showed temperatures dropping slightly for the following days. Typical, I said. My partner smiled, said nothing, and poured more wine. |
