About Molise
When we finally found it, the place sat tucked into a hillside with a view that made the whole detour feel like fate rather than incompetence. Stone walls, terracotta roof, that particular hush you only get when you're properly rural. The owner, a chap called Marco who spoke about four words of English and communicated mainly through gestures and sudden bursts of laughter, handed me keys and a bottle of his own olive oil. I attempted Italian. He attempted patience. We understood each other perfectly when he showed me the pizza oven outside and mimed the action of burning dinner. The first evening, we did absolutely nothing worth writing about, which was precisely the point. Sat on the terrace with that oil and some bread from the village, watching the light change over the mountains. The kids, who normally treat stillness as a personal insult, were oddly captivated by a lizard doing press-ups on the wall. My youngest declared we should name him. My eldest pointed out it was probably a different lizard every time. This developed into a surprisingly heated debate. What struck me was the rhythm of it. No rushing to tick off sights, no queueing for anything. Just the pool when it got warm, which it did properly by mid-morning, and the shade of the pergola when you needed to stop moving. I caught myself feeling slightly guilty about this lack of productivity, which is absurd when you're on holiday, but there it was. Some part of my brain still thinks relaxation needs to be earned. Marco's olive oil, drizzled on everything, gradually wore that nonsense down. The village itself, Venafro proper, is ten minutes by car if you take the winding road slowly, which you do because the alternative involves meeting someone coming the other way and discovering who has the braver reversing skills. We went for morning pastries and coffee that actually tastes of something, wandered the old streets without any particular destination, let the children chase pigeons in a square that probably hasn't changed much in centuries. There's a castle on a hill, because of course there is, this being Italy. We admired it from below with gelato and called it culture. By day three, I'd stopped checking my watch. The lizard, or lizards, became regular characters. The pizza oven produced something edible on the second attempt, though Marco's mimed warnings about temperature control suddenly made sense. I understood, finally, why people come to places like this and do very little. The doing nothing is the whole point. The hills, the oil, the pool, the slow evenings. It's not about what you collect, it's about what you leave behind. I left behind my SatNav, actually. Buried it in the glovebox with a kind of ceremonial finality. Some things aren't meant to be recalculated. |
