About Marche
Twenty minutes of increasingly creative three-point turns later, we found the actual property. My wife had that particular expression she saves for when I have been "adventurous" with directions. The children had fallen into the glazed silence of backseat endurance. But then we climbed out onto gravel that crunched satisfyingly underfoot, and there was the house, all warm stone and terracotta roof tiles, with shutters thrown open to the afternoon sun and a garden that smelled of rosemary and something else I could not identify but immediately wanted to bottle. The key was in the lockbox exactly where promised, which felt like a minor miracle given my navigational performance. I fumbled with the code while my youngest announced she needed the toilet with the urgent gravity only a seven-year-old can muster. The door swung open onto cool tile floors and that particular hush of a house that has been waiting quietly for occupants. We stumbled through rooms like sleepwalkers, dumping bags, opening cupboards, discovering the washing machine with the reverence of archaeologists unearthing a sacred relic. A week with self-catering laundry facilities represents genuine luxury when you have small children. I made the obligatory inspection of the outdoor space while my wife performed the equally obligatory inspection of mattress firmness. The garden sloped gently away from the house, dotted with olive trees that looked improbably ancient and a covered terrace where a wooden table sat waiting for the long dinners I had already begun planning in my head. There was a barbecue, slightly rusted in that reassuring way that suggests it has cooked a thousand satisfactory meals. Beyond the garden, the land rolled away toward distant hills, and I stood there with a cup of tea made from an unfamiliar Italian kettle, feeling that particular shift that happens when you stop travelling and actually arrive. The children discovered the pool. Their shrieks carried through the house, followed by my wife's calmer voice establishing ground rules about no running on wet tiles. I wandered back through the kitchen, noting the practical details now - the decent knives, the coffee pot, the fridge that would need stocking. A holiday home reveals its character in these particulars. This one felt lived-in without being worn-out, maintained by someone who understood that guests want charm without inconvenience. By evening, we had made the essential pilgrimage to a nearby supermarket and returned with bread, cheese, tomatoes that actually tasted of something, and wine that cost less than a London coffee. We ate on that terrace as the light faded, the children unusually quiet with full mouths, swallows darting overhead. My wife caught my eye across the table and raised her glass without comment. No comment was needed. I had got us lost, got us found, and now we were here, in this particular patch of Marche, with a week stretching ahead that smelled of charcoal and sunscreen and absolutely nowhere we needed to be. |
