About Marche
I should have known the satnav was up to no good the moment it tried to send me through a field outside Ancona. Twelve hours after leaving Gatwick, two flights, one hire car with suspicious air conditioning, and a growing conviction that Italian road signs are more suggestions than instructions, I finally crawled into Fano proper. The mishap came thirty seconds later, when I confidently reversed into what I assumed was our holiday let's parking space and heard a gentle crunch. Not another car, thank heavens, but a wheelie bin belonging to a very understanding nonna who appeared from nowhere, laughed, and patted my arm as if to say "another Brit who can't drive, how refreshing."

The property, tucked into a quiet residential corner not far from Fano's centro storico, revealed itself slowly. First impression: actual olive trees in the garden, which felt aggressively Italian in the best possible way. Second impression: the key safe required three attempts, two pairs of reading glasses, and a level of patience I do not possess after a journey involving a budget airline sandwich. By the time the door swung open, I was ready to weep with relief.

Inside, the place had that particular smell of somewhere properly lived-in rather than aggressively staged for tourists. Slightly musty in a comforting way, like my nan's airing cupboard. Terracotta tiles underfoot, the sort that stay deliciously cool even when the Marche sun is doing its worst. The kitchen immediately won me over, not because it was sleek or modern, but because someone had left actual coffee in the cupboard and a note suggesting the bar round the corner for fresh bread. Practical hospitality, the kind that matters more than fancy toiletries.

I dumped my bags with the reckless abandon of someone who has been wearing the same trousers for fourteen hours and wandered onto the terrace. Here's where I must pause for that gentle self-reflection the journey demanded. I'd spent months fretting about whether Fano was "enough" compared to flashier Italian destinations, whether a self-catering place rather than a hotel would feel like hard work. Standing there with a lukewarm bottle of water, watching swallows dart between the olive branches while distant church bells marked some hour I no longer cared about, I felt properly foolish. The anxiety of planning had nearly eclipsed the simple pleasure of arriving somewhere unhurried, unshowy, genuinely itself.

The afternoon light in Marche has a particular golden weight to it, something I noticed immediately despite my exhaustion. The garden needed watering, the furniture had that slightly faded look of things that stay outside year-round, and somewhere a neighbour was singing along to the radio with more enthusiasm than accuracy. It felt like slipping into a conversation already in progress, not being performed at.

I did eventually find the proper parking space, round the other side of the building, completely obvious in retrospect. The wheelie bin survived with nothing more than wounded dignity. By evening, armed with coffee, fresh bread from that recommended bar, and the particular smugness of someone who has successfully navigated a foreign supermarket for wine and cheese, I sat on that terrace properly for the first time. The journey's mishaps already felt like necessary punctuation, the kind of story I'll tell later with exaggerated gestures. For now, Fano had arrived in my consciousness not with grandeur but with olive trees, cool tiles, and the quiet promise of days unfolding at a pace I had forgotten existed.
