About Marche
The mishap came precisely three minutes from our destination. I spotted what I thought was the turning for Castel Colonna di Monterado, a charming gravel lane winding uphill between rows of olive trees still heavy with fruit. I turned with perhaps too much confidence. The gravel became mud. The mud became something I can only describe as a personal test of character. Our front wheels spun with a pathetic whirring sound that I swear carried a note of accusation. There we were, bogged down in an olive grove, surrounded by trees that had probably witnessed actual Romans and were now silently judging the bloke from Birmingham who couldn't handle a bit of autumn rain. My partner, bless her, found this hilarious. I did not, initially. But standing there in wellies that had seemed optimistic rather than practical back home, watching a local farmer approach on a tractor with the patient expression of someone who has rescued many such idiots, I felt something shift. The air smelled of damp earth and woodsmoke. The late afternoon sun, already low at that time of year, filtered through clouds in that particular October way that makes everything look slightly painted. Even my embarrassment felt somehow appropriate to the season, a small surrender to forces larger than my pride. The farmer, whose name I later learned was Franco, towed us out without a word of Italian that I could understand beyond his gentle chuckling. We followed his pointing to the proper entrance, a proper drive that I had somehow missed in my enthusiasm. Arriving properly at Castel Colonna di Monterado felt like stepping through a threshold into something carefully preserved by time and weather. The building sits within the historic walls of Monterado itself, and in late October the whole place carries the particular atmosphere of a hill town preparing for winter. Shutters were half-closed against the cooling afternoons. Pots of cyclamen and late-blooming salvias clustered around doorways, the last defiant colour before the grey months. The stone walls of the castel, that warm honey colour you find throughout this part of Marche, held what little heat the day had offered. Our apartment occupied part of the historic structure, and the first thing that struck me was the smell: woodsmoke from the fireplace, certainly, but also something older, the particular scent of stone that has been breathing for centuries. The rooms were vast, with ceilings that seemed designed to make you feel appropriately small. The kitchen had been updated with enough modern convenience to prevent actual hardship, but the windows were the originals, small and deep-set, framing views of the autumn countryside like deliberate paintings. I had worried that October might feel like a compromise, too late for summer swimming, too early for any proper Christmas atmosphere. I was wrong. The season gave everything a quality of intimacy that high summer could never manage. The shared swimming pool, too cold for actual use, sat empty and slightly melancholy, its surface reflecting grey skies. This did not feel like deprivation. It felt like honesty. That first evening, after the firewood had been lit and we had opened the bottle of Verdicchio we had picked up somewhere near Senigallia, I stood at one of those deep windows and watched the last light fade over the rolling hills. The trees were turning properly now, patches of yellow and rust against the evergreen of the maritime pines. Somewhere a dog barked, and another answered. The air had that particular autumn stillness, the sense of the world drawing inwards. My partner joined me, and we stood there in comfortable silence, the warmth of the fire at our backs, the cooling world before us. The morning's mishap in the olive grove already felt like something gifted to us, a story we would tell rather than a disaster we would suppress. The season had made it so, had slowed everything down enough that a moment of foolishness became a moment of connection, with Franco, with each other, with this particular place at this particular time. I had come seeking something I could not have articulated. I found instead the simple pleasure of being somewhere that asked nothing of me but presence, and of being there when the year itself was doing the same, turning inward, growing quiet, offering no distractions from what remained. |
