About Lombardy
I had been awake since four in the morning, driven to Gatwick in a state of barely contained excitement, survived a flight where the child behind me used my seat as a drum kit, and navigated Milan Malpensa with the confident swagger of someone who had absolutely no idea where they were going. By the time I picked up the hire car, I was running on espresso and stubbornness. The sat nav said Luino was an hour away. I said a prayer. We compromised on both being slightly wrong.

The drive down from the airport started well enough. The motorway gave way to winding roads, then to roads so narrow I found myself holding my breath whenever a Fiat approached from the opposite direction. I had the windows down, Italian radio playing something inexplicably cheerful, and a growing sense that I was properly on holiday now. Then came the mishap. I had stopped for petrol, feeling terribly continental, and managed to fill the tank while simultaneously locking my keys in the boot. There I stood, in a petrol station forecourt somewhere near Varese, watching my own car mock me through the glass. A very patient attendant called a locksmith. I ate a panini that tasted of shame. An hour and eighty euros later, I was mobile again, laughing at the absurdity of it because the alternative was weeping into my espresso.

I arrived in Luino as the afternoon was softening into evening. The town sits right on Lago Maggiore, that enormous stretch of water that looks almost arrogant in its beauty. I had chosen a holiday home just outside the centre, up a modest hill where the lake views apparently made up for the thigh-burning walk back from dinner. The property was a traditional Lombardy house, nothing flashy, with terracotta roof tiles and shutters that had seen better decades. I loved it instantly.

The key was in the lockbox as promised, though I fumbled with the code for longer than I care to admit, my brain still fogged from travel trauma. The door opened with a satisfying creak, and I stepped into cool tile and the particular hush of an Italian house in late afternoon. The living room was simple, furnished with the kind of solid wooden pieces that outlast trends and owners alike. A sofa that had clearly hosted generations of post-lunch naps. A dining table that demanded long meals and longer conversations.

I dumped my bags with the grace of a falling wardrobe and made straight for the terrace. The guide had mentioned a lake view, but estate agent photography had made me cynical. This, though, was the real thing. Lago Maggiore stretched before me, blue-grey in the fading light, with the mountains rising behind it like a painted backdrop. A ferry was crossing somewhere in the middle distance, trailing white wake. I stood there in my wrinkled travel clothes, still smelling faintly of petrol station panini, and felt something in my chest loosen.

The kitchen was compact but properly equipped, the sort where you could actually cook rather than perform emergency toast operations. I opened the fridge to find it empty and waiting, which felt like both a challenge and an invitation. The bedroom had that slightly musty freshness of a place kept closed against heat, with crisp linens and a window that framed a sliver of garden. The bathroom was tiled in that particular shade of peach that Italians seem committed to preserving.

I showered, changed, and walked down into Luino proper as the street lamps were flickering on. The town was quiet, contentedly so, with locals finishing their passeggiata and the lakefront settling into evening. I found a small trattoria near the harbour, ate pasta that made my earlier panini seem like a distant nightmare, and drank a local white wine without knowing enough about it to pretend otherwise.

Walking back up that hill afterwards, slightly wobbly and thoroughly content, I thought about how the best arrivals often come with a story attached. The locked keys, the lost hour, the petrol station shame, they had all become part of the texture now, something to laugh about over that very dining table I had admired. I was here. The lake was waiting. And tomorrow, I promised myself, I would do absolutely nothing in the most deliberate, glorious way possible.
