About Lazio
I have never been a natural at following sat nav instructions, so it will surprise absolutely no one that I managed to turn a straightforward drive from Rome Fiumicino into a meandering tour of every back lane between the airport and Vitorchiano. Three hours of increasingly narrow roads, one heated debate with a disembodied voice insisting I "turn around where possible," and a brief but thrilling encounter with a tractor that clearly owned the road. I arrived at the stone farmhouse with a crick in my neck, a profound respect for Italian agricultural machinery, and the certain knowledge that I had just made the best possible start to doing absolutely nothing for a week.

The property sat among olive groves with that particular stillness you only find in proper countryside. My host, Marco, appeared from behind a lemon tree with a welcome basket and the patient expression of a man who had watched many Britons emerge frazzled from hire cars. He showed me round the place - terracotta floors, wooden beams thick enough to suggest serious history, and a terrace that immediately announced itself as my headquarters for the duration. I unpacked with the urgency of someone who had already decided their schedule. Which was: no schedule.

The first morning set the tone entirely. I woke without alarm, made coffee in the small kitchen with its slightly wonky door, and carried my cup outside to watch the valley wake up. The sun climbed over the hills opposite with the leisurely pace of someone who also understood the value of taking their time. I had brought three books and finished none of them, which I consider the mark of a successful holiday. There is something deeply satisfying about reading the same paragraph four times because you keep looking up at swallows or olive branches or the particular quality of light on stone walls.

Vitorchiano itself sits perched on volcanic rock, a proper medieval cluster of houses that rewards the gentlest exploration. I wandered up most mornings, never early, usually when the need for a second coffee coincided with curiosity about which narrow street I had not yet tried. The village moves at a pace that makes you conscious of your own footsteps, your own breathing. I found a small bar where the owner remembered my order by day three and started preparing it when he saw me approaching. This felt like an achievement greater than any I had managed in months of office life.

The afternoons dissolved into a routine of such profound laziness that I hesitate to call it routine. Terrace, sun lounger, occasional relocation to the pool when the heat demanded it. I learned the difference between eleven o'clock sun and four o'clock sun with the expertise of someone who had absolutely nothing else to learn. The property's garden held rosemary and lavender that scented the warm air without any effort from me, which seemed only fair given my commitment to inactivity.

I did make it to the nearby river valley one afternoon, following a path through oak woods that Marco had mentioned. Walked perhaps forty minutes, sat on a rock for an hour, walked back. This counted, in my new accounting, as vigorous exercise.

By the final days I had stopped checking my phone entirely, stopped planning beyond the next meal, stopped translating my thoughts into anything more structured than observation. The sat nav mishap that began the trip had become a sort of origin story, the moment I surrendered control and found something better. I left with the books still unfinished, a slight sunburn I refused to regret, and the certain knowledge that I would spend the flight home planning precisely when I could return to doing absolutely nothing in particular.
