About Lazio Countryside
The mishap came at the worst possible moment. Nature called with the urgency only a large motorway cappuccino can inspire, and the nearest civilisation appeared to be a goat giving me a judgmental stare from a stone wall. I scrambled behind a cypress tree with all the dignity of a man who has abandoned every shred of self-respect, only to discover mid-squat that I had chosen the one spot in Lazio with absolutely no cover from the road. A Fiat Panda puttered past, the driver waving cheerfully as if this sort of thing happened daily. I waved back, because what else do you do? I have never felt more British or more ridiculous in my life. By the time I reached the property, I was ready to weep with relief. The house sat perched on the hillside like it had grown there naturally, all weathered stone and terracotta tiles that had probably baked under this sun for centuries. A woman named Luisa met me at the gate, speaking rapid Italian that my GCSE brain translated approximately three seconds too late. She handed me keys and gestured at the view, and I forgot entirely about my earlier humiliation. The first thing that struck me was the silence. Not the uncomfortable, oppressive kind, but the thick, golden sort that makes you realise how much noise you normally carry around in your head. Somewhere distant, a dog barked once and thought better of it. Bees moved lazily between lavender bushes. I stood on the terrace with my ridiculous suitcase and just breathed in the smell of warm stone and dry earth. The pool caught the late afternoon light like someone had spilled mercury across the surface. I had promised myself I would unpack properly, behave like a functioning adult, perhaps even attempt that basic pasta recipe Luisa had scribbled down. Instead I found a sun lounger, kicked off shoes that had developed an intimate relationship with Italian gravel, and watched the sky turn the sort of pink that makes photographers weep and poets embarrassed by their own metaphors. Dinner that evening was a disaster of my own making. The local shop had sold me cheese I could not name, bread that could genuinely serve as a weapon, and tomatoes that tasted like actual sunshine. I assembled this with the blind confidence of a man who has watched too many cooking programmes, sat on the terrace with a cheap bottle of local white, and promptly dropped a tomato down my shirt. The stain remains. I consider it a souvenir. Lying there later, full of cheese and mild self-loathing, I watched fireflies appear in the dark like someone had scattered faulty Christmas lights through the hedgerows. Somewhere in the valley below, a church bell struck ten with the casual irregularity that suggests Italians have better things to do than precise timekeeping. I thought about the sat nav, the goat, the Fiat Panda driver who probably tells this story at dinner parties. I thought about how I had arrived frazzled and ridiculous and somehow, within hours, felt entirely present in a way I had not managed in months. The countryside does that, I suppose. It does not care about your dignity or your plans. It simply waits, warm and ancient and indifferent, until you finally slow down enough to meet it properly. |
