I should have known the sat nav was up to no good the moment it tried to send me down what looked like a goat track outside Rome. Three hours of driving from Ciampino, my patience wearing thinner than airport coffee, and there I was, squinting at a sign that definitely said "Rieti" but in a font last used by the Romans themselves. The mishap came shortly after, when I confidently reversed into what I assumed was the property driveway and promptly wedged the hire car between two olive trees that had clearly stood there since before my grandmother was born. The owner, a splendid chap called Marco, appeared from nowhere with a wheelbarrow and the kind of sympathetic smile you reserve for toddlers and lost tourists.

The property itself, when I finally extracted myself and the Fiat from its arboreal embrace, was exactly the sort of thing that makes you forgive Mediterranean navigation. A solid stone farmhouse with terracotta tiles that had weathered to the colour of strong tea, it sat in a valley that felt deliberately hidden from the modern world. Marco explained in excellent English that the building dated back to the 1700s, though I was too busy staring at the view to absorb much history. The Reatini Mountains rose in the near distance, hazy and blue, while the immediate surroundings consisted of nothing but olive groves, the occasional cypress, and a silence so complete I could hear my own heartbeat settling after the driving ordeal.

Inside, the place smelled of woodsmoke and dried lavender, that particular country-house perfume no candle company has ever successfully bottled. The kitchen featured a fireplace you could practically stand in, and a table made from a single slab of walnut that must have required six men to position. I ran my hand along it like a fool, feeling the grain, suddenly aware of how long it had been since I touched anything that wasn't laminate or plastic. The bedrooms upstairs had exposed beams low enough to threaten concussion, and windows that opened onto the same unchanged view that someone two centuries earlier might have woken to. I caught myself standing there in my socks, holding a suitcase I had forgotten to unpack, just breathing it in.

The gentle self-reflection crept in during that first evening, as I sat on the terrace with a bottle of local Cesanese wine that Marco had left as a welcome gift. I had spent months planning this escape, imagining productivity and brisk country walks and finally reading those three novels. Instead I found myself doing absolutely nothing, watching swallows dart between the cypress trees, and realising with some embarrassment how desperately I needed this particular flavour of stillness. The mishap with the car, the sat nav confusion, the general comedy of my arrival - none of it mattered against this. I had come chasing an idea of rural Italy and found something quieter and more honest than my expectations allowed.

Darkness fell without ceremony, the valley filling with the sound of crickets and something moving in the undergrowth that I chose not to investigate. Somewhere a dog barked once, then thought better of it. I poured another glass and let the wine taste of the place itself, earthy and slightly wild, and understood that proper country stays begin not with activity but with surrender.
