About Friuli
I should have known the holiday proper had not truly begun until I had made a complete fool of myself. Twelve hours of travel from Manchester, two flights, a hire car from Trieste Airport, and a determined drive north into the Friuli hills had left me rather pleased with my own competence. I found Sutrio without drama, navigated the narrow lanes with only minor terror, and pulled up at the stone house with a sense of triumph that proved entirely premature.

The key, you see, was in a lockbox. Simple enough. I punched in the code, opened the box, and promptly dropped the entire thing into a flower pot. It clattered against terracotta with a sound that surely carried to Slovenia. Worse, my phone, which I had balanced on the car roof to free both hands, chose that moment to slide off and land face-down in a puddle of yesterday's rain. I stood there in the dusk, one hand still reaching for phantom keys, wondering how I had managed so many hours of complex logistics only to fall at this final, ridiculous hurdle.

A neighbour emerged, drawn by the commotion or perhaps by instinct for entertainment. She spoke rapid Friulano, which is not quite Italian and certainly not anything my schoolboy efforts prepared me for. Through gestures and my increasingly desperate pointing, she understood, laughed with genuine warmth, and fished the lockbox from the geraniums. She even wiped my phone on her apron and showed me the proper technique for these particular keys, which required a degree of patience I had apparently abandoned somewhere over the Alps.

The door opened onto wooden beams and the particular hush of a house that has stood through proper winters. I had expected this much from the photographs, but not the smell: woodsmoke lingering in stone, something herbal from the garden, and that clean mountain air that makes you aware of how much London has done to your lungs. I stood in the doorway longer than necessary, letting the neighbour's amused farewell fade, feeling suddenly and rather embarrassingly close to tears. Travel does this to me. The accumulation of small stresses, then the release into somewhere unmistakably itself.

The house was built for practicality rather than pretension. Thick walls that promised coolness in summer, a kitchen with pans that had actually been used, furniture that creaked with honest age. I found a bottle of local wine left as welcome, and drank a glass standing at the window, watching darkness settle over the village. Somewhere a dog barked, and another answered, and then the proper silence returned.

I had planned to unpack properly, to establish order, to be the sort of person who arrives with efficiency. Instead I sat on the wooden bench outside, still in my travel clothes, and watched the stars emerge with an intensity that city living had made me forget. The mishap with the lockbox, the phone in the puddle, my theatrical despair: these felt already like the necessary price of admission, the small humiliation that earned me my place here.

Morning would bring the proper exploration of Sutrio, the walking trails I had read about, perhaps some attempt at conversation in my broken Italian. For now, arrival was enough. The journey complete, the foolishness survived, the first impressions quietly forming into something like belonging.
