About Friuli
I have never been so grateful to see a set of pine trees in all my life. Six hours after leaving Gatwick, two wrong turns round Venice, and one spectacular argument with a sat nav that insisted "turn left" meant "plunge into lagoon," we finally spotted the sign for Lignano Sabbiadoro. My other half was gripping the steering wheel like it owed him money. I was clutching a lukewarm espresso from an autostrada services that tasted faintly of diesel. We were, in every sense, ready for this holiday to begin.

The mishap came not five minutes from the property. Picture the scene: a narrow lane, a determined Italian nonna on a scooter, and me trying to navigate with a phone that had slipped into some mysterious power-saving mode. "Just there," I said, pointing at a promising-looking gate. It was not our gate. It was, in fact, the back entrance to what appeared to be a very private and very annoyed someone's vegetable garden. Two dogs barked. A man in vest and slippers emerged. I smiled in that desperate British way and reversed with the grace of a cow on roller skates. My other half has not let me live it down. "The tomato incident," he calls it now, usually while grinning over his morning coffee.

But then we found it. The actual property. And I will be honest: after the journey, the wrong garden, and the lingering humiliation, I was prepared to be underwhelmed. I was not. The place sat tucked among those tall pines I had been craving, a proper little hideaway with a terrace that immediately demanded a cold drink and a sit-down. The air smelled of resin and salt, that particular Adriatic combination that makes you realise you have left everything else behind. Somewhere in the distance, I could hear the sea.

Inside, it was simple and spot-on. Tiled floors that would stay cool even in August heat, a kitchen that looked like it had actually been used by real humans rather than staged for a photograph, and beds that promised the kind of sleep you only get on holiday. I opened the windows and the pine scent rushed in, mixed with something floral I could not name. Jasmine, maybe. I am hopeless with plants. See: tomato incident.

What struck me most was the quiet. Not silence exactly - there were birds, distant voices, the occasional scooter - but a kind of settled calm. We had arrived late afternoon, that golden hour when the light turns everything slightly magical, and the terrace became our observation deck. A woman cycled past with a baguette sticking out her basket. A cat wandered through the garden next door with the entitlement of a creature who knows exactly where it belongs. I felt, for the first time in months, like I might belong somewhere too, if only for a fortnight.

My other half opened the wine we had bought at a service station in Veneto, which tells you everything about our planning. It was too warm and probably too cheap. We drank it anyway, watching the light fade through the pines, not talking much, not needing to. The journey had been long and slightly ridiculous. The tomato incident would enter family lore. But sitting there, slightly sun-touched and thoroughly done-in, I thought: this is exactly why we do it. The wrong turns, the bad wine, the glorious relief of finally arriving somewhere that feels right.

Tomorrow we would find the beach, figure out the local shops, work out which trattoria deserved our custom. Tonight, we just sat there, two tired Brits in a little piece of Friuli, listening to the pines whisper and the sea promise it was waiting.
