About Friuli
I have never been so grateful for air conditioning in my entire life, and I say that as someone who once spent a summer working in a kitchen with a broken extractor fan. The drive from Trieste Airport to Lignano Sabbiadoro had been straightforward enough, if you do not count my decision to rely on the hire car's sat nav rather than downloading an offline map. There we were, my partner and I, cruising confidently down the Autostrada until the thing decided we needed a scenic route through what I can only describe as someone's vegetable patch. I am fairly certain we interrupted a local man's lunch. He waved. I waved back. Neither of us knew why.

We arrived at the holiday home in the absolute thick of July, that particular Italian summer heat that wraps around you like a damp wool blanket the moment you step out of the car. The property was one of those modern terraced numbers, all clean lines and pale render, tucked into a residential pocket just a short stroll from the beach. I had worried it might feel a bit soulless compared to the crumbling farmhouse fantasies I usually entertain, but the moment I opened that front door and felt the manufactured cool hit my face, I could have wept with gratitude.

The first afternoon was a write-off in the best possible way. We dumped our cases, opened the sliding doors to the terrace, and promptly retreated indoors again. The heat shimmered off every surface outside. Even the pool, visible from our little patio area, looked almost too warm to be refreshing. I had packed with romantic visions of al fresco dining, of long evenings with wine and cicadas. Instead we ate supermarket mozzarella standing in front of the fridge with the door open, which I am not proud of but absolutely do not regret.

It is funny how a place reveals itself differently depending on when you visit. By evening, when the sun finally dipped and the temperature dropped to merely oppressive rather than actually dangerous, we ventured out toward the beach. The sand was still warm underfoot, and the Adriatic lapped at the shore with that particular flat calm you only get in high summer. Families were still out, children shrieking in the shallows, elderly couples taking their passeggiata along the waterline. Lignano Sabbiadoro in July is not subtle. It is bright, loud, unapologetically saturated with colour and noise and the smell of sunscreen and fried seafood.

I had expected to feel disappointed by how little we had done that first day. I am the sort of person who arrives somewhere with a mental checklist of experiences to accumulate. But there was something about that enforced slowness, the way the season itself dictated our pace, that felt like a gentle reproach to my usual restlessness. The heat was not something to battle through for the sake of productivity. It was the whole point, in a way. The reason the tomatoes tasted so good, why the evenings stretched long and golden, why everyone moved with that particular unhurried rhythm.

By the time we walked back to the house, the residential streets had that lovely emptied-out feeling of a resort town after the beach crowd has dispersed. Someone was cooking with garlic nearby. A dog barked once, half-heartedly. We stopped for gelato that melted faster than we could eat it, which became a running theme of the week. I cannot remember what flavour I chose. I can remember exactly how the warm night air felt against my sun-pinked shoulders, and how I finally understood that this was what we had come for, really. Not the sights or the activities or any of the things I would normally have ticked off. Just this. Just July in Lignano, doing absolutely nothing, and finding it was enough.
