About Emilia Romagna
The mishap, because every decent holiday needs one, came about twenty minutes earlier. We'd stopped at a petrol station somewhere near Ravenna for water and a loo break, and in my exhausted state I managed to buy a giant bottle of sparkling water instead of still. Not a disaster, you might think. Except I then proceeded to open it in the car while my partner was navigating a particularly enthusiastic Italian junction. The resulting fountain soaked my shorts, the passenger seat, and my last clean t-shirt. I spent the final stretch of the journey looking like I'd had a small but meaningful accident, windows down in the feeble hope of drying off, apologising to a man who was no longer speaking to me. By the time we pulled up to the property, I was damp, crumpled, and deeply uncertain about my life choices. But then the gate swung open, and something shifted. The place sat tucked among those same tall pines I'd been celebrating, a low, unhurried building that seemed to have all the time in the world. No grand statement, no fuss. Just a quiet confidence that it had been here a while and would still be here when we'd all stopped rushing about. The first thing that struck me was the smell. Not the pine, though that was there, but something warmer underneath. Dry earth, maybe, and the faint sweetness of jasmine from somewhere just out of sight. Our host appeared with a smile that suggested she had seen far worse than a middle-aged man in wet shorts, and handed us a key with a small ceramic tag that clinked satisfyingly against my palm. Inside, the place had that particular stillness of somewhere that has been properly shut up against the heat. Terracotta tiles underfoot, cool enough to make me flinch pleasantly. Wooden beams that had darkened with decades of summers. The kitchen window framed a view of the garden that made me forget, for a moment, that I was still half-damp and carrying a plastic bag of soggy clothes. I wandered out back while my partner dealt with the luggage, partly to help and partly because I needed a minute. The garden opened up beyond a covered terrace, all dappled shade and the kind of lawn that has learned to live with long, dry spells. A hammock hung between two trees, slightly askew, as if someone had left it in a hurry. I stood there in my ridiculous state and felt something loosen in my chest. The journey, the water incident, the navigation arguments. They were already becoming the kind of story we'd tell later, once the embarrassment had fermented into something amusing. My partner appeared with two glasses of something cold and local, and we sat on those slightly wonky terrace chairs as the afternoon light filtered through the pines. Somewhere in the distance, probably not far, I could hear the faint suggestion of the sea. We didn't move for an hour. Didn't need to. The mishap had brought us here, slightly bedraggled and thoroughly ridiculous, and here was already turning out to be exactly where we needed to be. |
