About Emilia Romagna
The drive from Bologna airport to Berceto was supposed to take two hours, give or take. We had the sat nav, a packet of crisps wedged between the seats, and two children asking "are we nearly there?" at roughly ninety-second intervals. What we did not have, as I discovered somewhere past Parma, was any actual fuel. The hire car's gauge had apparently been lying to us for the better part of forty kilometres, and we sputtered onto the forecourt of a petrol station with the kind of timing that makes you believe in guardian angels, or at least in the mercy of Italian petrol pump attendants who have clearly seen this before.

We arrived at the cottage as the sun was doing that golden thing it does in Emilia Romagna, all long shadows and dust motes and the smell of someone else's dinner cooking nearby. The key was where they said it would be, under a flowerpot that looked like it had been there since the war. I dropped it twice trying to unlock the door, still jittery from the fuel drama, and managed to scrape my knuckle on the frame for good measure. My wife gave me that look, the one that says she will be telling this story at Christmas for the next decade.

But then we stepped inside, and the whole journey melted away. The place had that proper cottage feel, not the polished sort you see in magazines where nobody actually lives, but the genuine article. Beamed ceilings you could bang your head on if you forgot to duck. A kitchen that smelled faintly of woodsmoke and rosemary, even though no fire had been lit. Terracotta tiles underfoot, worn smooth by decades of footsteps. The children shot upstairs to claim bedrooms before we'd even set down the bags, and I heard my daughter shriek with delight at something, probably the view from her window.

I made the mistake of trying to operate the coffee maker straight away, still in holiday-stress mode, and produced something that tasted like burnt walnuts. My wife took over, because she always does, and I wandered out to the terrace with my terrible coffee and finally let myself breathe. The hills rolled away in every direction, green and gold and impossibly peaceful. A cockerel crowed somewhere down the valley, and another answered it, and I found myself grinning like an idiot.

There is something about arriving somewhere rural after a journey that has gone slightly wrong. It strips away any pretence of being in control. You are not the person who planned this trip, who packed the bags, who navigated the motorways. You are simply someone standing on a terrace in a place called Berceto, drinking dreadful coffee, watching swallows dart above the olive trees, and realising that none of the chaos matters anymore.

The children reappeared demanding exploration, so we walked down to the village as the light faded. Berceto is small, the sort of place where an old man sits on a bench and watches you pass with friendly suspicion. We found a shop selling parmesan and local wine and not much else, which was precisely enough. Back at the cottage, we ate bread and cheese on that terrace, the children half-asleep in their chairs, and I thought about how I had worried so much about the journey and so little about what came after.

The fuel gauge had lied, the key had been fiddly, my coffee was undrinkable, and I had a scrape on my knuckle that stung when I forgot about it. None of it mattered. We were here, in a cottage that felt like it had been waiting for us, in a part of Italy that does not shout about itself but simply gets on with being beautiful. I finished my wine and listened to the cockerels having their evening conversation, and decided that sometimes the best way to arrive somewhere is slightly dishevelled, thoroughly relieved, and ready to do absolutely nothing at all.
