About Emilia Romagna Coast
The actual journey from the UK had been smooth enough, Bologna airport to hire car, then east toward the coast with the windows down and that particular Italian late afternoon light making everything look like a film set. But the final stretch to Lido di Spina? Let's just say I have now seen every possible angle of a drainage ditch that I never needed to see. We found it eventually, of course. A quiet pocket of the Emilia Romagna coast, low-rise and pine-scented, the kind of place where bicycles outnumber cars and nobody seems in a particular rush about anything. Our place was down a sandy track, surrounded by those tall, skinny pines that look like they've been stretched. The sort of vegetation that has absolutely given up on being impressive and is all the better for it. The mishap, though. The proper one. I'd been so pleased with myself for packing light, for once, that I'd forgotten to pack at all, practically. We hauled our single shared case up the stairs, feeling smug and minimalist, only to discover I'd brought my partner's summer dresses and left my entire bag in the boot of our neighbour's car back in Yorkshire. Don't ask. Something about helping with airport parking, a confused early morning, and a complete failure of basic adult function. So there I was, first evening in Lido di Spina, wearing a borrowed oversized t-shirt and a pair of shorts I'd had to emergency purchase from a beach shop that primarily sold inflatable dolphins. The shorts had "SPIAGGIA" written across the back in enormous letters. I looked, my partner kindly observed, like a middle-aged man who had lost a bet. But here's the thing. Within twenty-four hours, I genuinely stopped caring. This place has that effect. The days here have developed a rhythm so lazy it barely qualifies as rhythm at all. Morning coffee on the terrace, watching the pine needles do absolutely nothing in the warm air. A slow walk or cycle to the nearby stretch of beach, where the Adriatic rolls in with the kind of polite, unassuming waves that make you feel welcome rather than challenged. Then hours of precisely nothing. Reading books I started three years ago. Floating. Forgetting what day it is and not bothering to check. The local area doesn't demand much of you, which is perfect. There's a gentle promenade for evening strolls, a few family-run places for seafood that tastes like someone actually cares, and enough everyday Italian life going on to make you feel like you're somewhere rather than nowhere. I've watched an old man tend to his tomato plants with more dedication than I've ever applied to anything. I've seen teenagers on bicycles carrying entire pizzas home balanced on handlebars. Small, real things. My emergency beach shorts have become a weird kind of uniform. I cycle to the little shops for bread and cheese in them. I read my book in them. I have become, definitively, a man in ridiculous shorts having the most restful week of his year. There's something humbling about a holiday that strips you back like this. No plans, no achievements, no stories worth telling at dinner parties. Just heat and pine scent and the slow realisation that doing very little is, occasionally, exactly enough. I should probably buy some proper clothes before we leave. Or perhaps I won't bother. |
