About Emilia Romagna Coast
The mishap came just outside Ravenna. I had insisted on taking a scenic route. "It'll be charming," I said, waving my phone about. "Look at these little roads through the pine forests." What the map did not show was a local cycling event, several hundred enthusiastic participants, and a road closure that sent us on a forty-five-minute detour through flat agricultural land that smelled powerfully of ripe tomatoes and, occasionally, something less pleasant. The air conditioning gave up somewhere around Argenta. My partner gave me a look that said everything without wasting precious energy on words. I opened and closed my mouth like a fish. The tomatoes shimmered in the heat. By the time we reached Lido degli Estensi, I had developed what I can only describe as a personal relationship with my seatbelt. We found the holiday home down a quiet residential street, past lines of parked bicycles and families already heading beachward with inflatables and determined expressions. The key collection involved a charmingly chaotic system of coded boxes and Italian instructions that my school-level vocabulary mangled beyond recognition. A helpful neighbour eventually took pity on us, emerging from her garden with a hose in one hand and the correct combination in the other. Stepping inside was like entering a different season entirely. The shutters had been kept closed, trapping cool shadow against the thick walls. The tiled floors sent a delicious chill through my sandals. I stood in the hallway and actually laughed out loud, partly from relief and partly from the absurdity of the previous three hours. My partner had already located the fridge and was pressing a cold bottle of water to their forehead with the devotion of a religious experience. That first evening, the season dictated everything. We ventured out around seven, when the heat finally loosened its grip and the town began its characteristic summer rhythm. The streets filled with people moving slowly, deliberately, as if underwater. Children who had been kept indoors during the fiercest hours now careered about on bicycles. We found a trattoria with tables spilling onto the pavement and ate piadina that was still warm from the griddle, the thin flatbread somehow perfect for appetites that the heat had made unpredictable. I drank a beer that tasted of rescue. Walking back through streets still radiating stored warmth, I noticed how the holiday home's location shaped the whole week to come. We were close enough to hear the distant murmur of the Adriatic, that particular soft crash of summer waves. The pine scent from the nearby forest drifted over everything, mixing with cooking smells and sunscreen. This was not the Italy of spring wildflowers or autumn truffle hunts. This was peak season, slightly chaotic, thoroughly democratic, alive with the particular madness of families and couples and groups of friends all escaping to the same narrow strip of coast. I thought about our airless detour and smiled despite myself. The heat had nearly broken us, but it had also delivered us here, to this specific moment, this specific place, at this specific time of year when the whole town seemed to hold its breath through the middle of the day and then exhale into long, warm evenings. Some holidays begin with smooth efficiency. Others begin with tomato fields and broken air conditioning and the quiet realisation that you would not change a single thing. |
