About Emilia Romagna Coast
My partner gave me that look. You know the one. The look that says "I love you but I am considering faking my own death and starting again as a fisherman in Rimini." We'd booked a week in a holiday home on Albarella, that strange and wonderful private island off the Emilia Romagna coast. I'd seen the photos online - pine forests, canals, a golf course that looked like someone had ironed the grass. It had seemed impossibly civilised. Right then, parked at a barrier with a security guard approaching, it felt impossibly distant. I did what any sensible person would do. I smiled broadly, waved my phone about as if it contained state secrets, and said "Buongiorno" with the confidence of someone who once ordered a cappuccino in Rome without embarrassing themselves. The guard, bless him, was either deeply kind or deeply tired. He found our reservation, raised the barrier, and we crawled onto the island at approximately the speed of a confused tortoise. The first thing that strikes you about Albarella is the silence. Not empty silence, but the thick, pine-scented hush of somewhere that takes its peace seriously. No mopeds roaring past. No frantic coastal chaos. Just neat roads winding through maritime forest, cyclists nodding as they pass, and the occasional glimpse of water between the trees. My shoulders, which had been somewhere near my ears since Lyon, began their slow descent. Our holiday home sat near one of the canals that thread through the island like veins. I'd expected something modest. What we found was a low, terracotta-roofed bungalow with a garden that looked genuinely lived-in, not hotel-perfect. A lemon tree in a pot. A slightly wonky sun umbrella. The kind of place that immediately suggests someone else's happy summers, now temporarily yours. I fumbled with the key safe, naturally. Dropped the code. Dropped the key. Dropped my dignity somewhere on the doorstep. But then the door opened and there it was - that particular holiday home smell of clean linen and possibility, with the faint promise of someone else's olive oil in the kitchen cupboard. I walked straight through to the terrace, still clutching my phone like a talisman. The garden backed onto a quiet waterway. A heron stood on the opposite bank with the patient superiority of someone who had never forgotten a booking confirmation in their life. Somewhere nearby, a family was laughing in Italian, the sound carrying across the water with that particular clarity you only get in still, warm air. My partner appeared beside me with two glasses of something cold and local. We stood there, slightly sunburned from the drive, slightly stunned to have arrived, slightly ridiculous in our travel-wrinkled clothes. The heron judged us silently. "You know what?" I said. "What?" "I'd forget it again." He laughed, properly, for the first time since Milan. And I thought, right there on that terrace with the canal at our feet and the pine trees murmuring overhead, that this was exactly where I wanted to be. Exhausted, disorganised, completely unprepared, and absolutely present. The journey had been long and I'd been an idiot. But sometimes, I think, you need to earn your arrival. And sometimes you need to forget the paperwork to remember what you're actually looking for. |
