About Campania
My wife gave me that look. You know the one. The look that says "I love you, but I am also keeping a mental tally." The property, a proper old stone farmhouse near Sessa Cilento, revealed itself slowly down a gravel track that our saloon car treated with the suspicion it usually reserves for multi-storey car parks. Olive trees lined the approach, their silver-green leaves flickering in the late afternoon heat. Somewhere in the distance, a dog barked with the lazy enthusiasm of something that had never once been asked to hurry. The key was exactly where the owner said it would be: under a terracotta pot beside the door, next to a half-eaten fig that I choose to believe was abandoned by a bird and not a previous guest with questionable manners. The door stuck slightly, then gave way with a wooden groan that suggested the house had been holding its breath waiting for us. Inside, the smell hit me first. Not the musty, forgotten scent I had braced for, but something warm and lived-in. Dried lavender hanging from a beam. Last night's wood smoke still clinging to the stone walls. The kitchen was gloriously unmodern, all terracotta tiles and a fridge that hummed like a contented grandfather. My daughter immediately claimed the bedroom with the wrought-iron balcony overlooking the valley. My son discovered that the ancient sofa was exactly the right springiness for repeated launching. I discovered that the shower required a degree in engineering and a willingness to accept lukewarm as a lifestyle choice. By evening, the mirror incident had softened into family folklore. We sat on the terrace with bread from the bakery in Sessa Cilento village, proper buffalo mozzarella that wept milk when you cut it, and tomatoes that actually tasted of something. The children, who had spent the journey competing to see who could complain most creatively, fell silent in the way that only exhaustion and genuine contentment can achieve. I watched the light change over the hills, turning from gold to something softer, something that made the olive trees look like they were holding onto the day reluctantly. A gecko appeared on the wall, regarded us with the superiority of a creature that pays no rent, and vanished. The fridge hummed. The children bickered half-heartedly about who had more blanket. My wife poured wine and did not mention the mirror once. This, I thought, is why you do it. Not for the polished perfection of a hotel, but for the glorious, slightly broken authenticity of a place that asks you to meet it halfway. The lukewarm shower. The sticking door. The fig mystery. The mirror that now wobbles slightly when you adjust it, a permanent souvenir of arrival. Tomorrow we might walk to the village for more bread. We might find the beach at San Marco, twenty minutes down the hill. We might do absolutely nothing at all, which is increasingly my favourite kind of holiday ambition. For now, though, there is wine cooling in that humming fridge, children falling asleep with the abandon of the truly tired, and a gecko somewhere judging my life choices. I have never been so happy to lose a wing mirror in my life. |
