About Campania
I have never been so relieved to see a washing machine in my life. Three hours into our drive from Naples Airport, after a wrong turn that took us through what I am fairly certain was someone's olive grove, we finally rolled up to San Marco di Castellabate. I stepped out of the hire car feeling rather pleased with myself, stretched dramatically, and promptly knocked an entire bottle of sparkling water onto my lap. The seat, my trousers, my dignity - all soaked. My partner just stood there, holding the key safe code, doing that thin-lipped smile he has perfected over fifteen years of my nonsense.

The property itself, when I eventually waddled over, immediately made me forget my sodden state. A proper old stone house with that faded terracotta roof you see on postcards, sitting among gardens that smelled of lemon and something herby I could not identify. I later learned it was oregano growing wild in a crack by the path. Of course it was. This is Campania. Things simply grow here, whether you planned them or not.

Our first attempt at entering was not elegant. The key safe required a code, fine motor skills, and apparently a degree in engineering. I stood there dripping, jiggling a small metal box while my partner read the instructions aloud with increasing volume and decreasing patience. A lizard watched from the wall. I swear it judged me. When the key finally dropped into my palm, I may have shouted something triumphant that echoed across the valley. Sorry, neighbours. If you are reading this, I am the soggy English woman. Hello.

Inside, the house had that lovely cool darkness that old stone buildings manage in July. Terracotta floors, wooden beams, furniture that looked like it had actual stories attached. I made straight for the washing machine, which I had spotted during my damp shuffle through the kitchen. Forty degrees, quick cycle, saved my remaining trousers from a week of smelling like a damp basement. The small things matter on holiday.

We had arrived later than planned, so our first exploration was limited to the garden and the immediate lane outside. The garden slopes down toward views I was not prepared for - that stretch of Tyrrhenian Sea, hazy blue meeting hazier blue, with Castellabate's old town visible on its hill across the way. I stood there in borrowed shorts, still slightly damp around the edges, and felt that particular holiday feeling where your shoulders drop about three inches without you asking them to.

Dinner that first evening was whatever we could assemble from the small shop in San Marco village, a ten-minute wander down a lane that switches between cobble and cracked asphalt with charming unpredictability. Bread, cheese, tomatoes that actually tasted of something, a bottle of local Aglianico that cost less than a London coffee. We ate on the terrace as the light went golden, then pink, then that particular deep blue that makes you understand why people paint landscapes.

I kept checking my phone for the time, some residual work anxiety, until my partner gently suggested I stop. He was right. The washing machine hummed somewhere inside, my one pair of dry trousers flapped on the line, and somewhere below us the sea did whatever the sea does at dusk. I had no idea what day it was. This felt like genuine progress.

That first night I slept better than I had in months, waking once to unfamiliar silence and the distant sound of a dog somewhere in the village. No traffic, no hum of city. Just stone walls, thin cotton sheets, and the faint smell of lemon drifting through the shutters I had forgotten to close properly. I did not get up to fix them. Some mistakes, I am learning, are worth keeping.
