About Campania
The owner, a wiry chap called Franco with hands that looked like they had spent forty years in olive groves, watched us climb out of the car with the patient expression of someone who had seen this exact scene many times before. He did not mention our lateness. He simply handed me a key that weighed about half a kilo and said, in English far better than my Italian, "You are here now. This is the important thing." I have thought about that sentence at least twice a day since. The villa itself is the sort of place that undoes you slowly. Stone floors that stay cool even when the afternoon heat presses down. Wooden beams thick enough to suggest serious structural commitment from previous centuries. Franco had left a bottle of local aglianico on the kitchen table, which I opened within forty minutes using the corkscrew we had indeed remembered to pack, celebrated with a small internal victory parade, and then promptly forgot to bring to the terrace. I drank it standing at the kitchen counter, staring out at a garden that seemed to operate on entirely different time to the rest of the world. That garden became the centre of everything. Not in any organised, purposeful way. I did not garden. I barely even walked through it with intention. I simply migrated between spots like a very lazy sun-seeker, carrying whichever book I was failing to finish. The hammock between two lemon trees received particular attention. I would settle in with every intention of reading, then discover twenty minutes later that I had been watching a lizard make its methodical way across a stone wall and had not turned a single page. This happened repeatedly. I stopped feeling guilty about it by day three, which felt like genuine personal growth. The pool helped, obviously. Not for swimming lengths, which would have required ambition I had deliberately left at home. For floating, mainly. For the particular pleasure of being just submerged enough to feel weightless while still able to reach the edge for my water glass. My partner developed a habit of dozing on the lounger with a hat over their face, occasionally murmuring something about needing to visit the market in Vallo that we never actually visited. We would discuss dinner plans around eleven in the morning, then execute none of them, contenting ourselves instead with bread, tomatoes, and cheese from the small shop ten minutes down the road. Evenings fell into their own unhurried rhythm. Cooking happened when hunger finally outweighed the effort required to stand up. We ate outside, always, surrounded by the particular darkness of countryside nights, the sort that makes you realise how much artificial light you normally live with. Fireflies appeared in the lower garden after rain, which I mention only because I had previously believed fireflies to be largely fictional, like polite internet commenters or comfortable budget airline seats. On our final morning, I found Franco had left a bag of lemons by the gate. No note. Just lemons, still attached to their leaves, smelling like concentrated sunshine. I carried them home and have been using them sparingly, one at a time, making each last as long as possible. Some experiences, I am learning, resist being hurried. |
