About Calabria
The mishap, I should confess, was entirely of my own making. I had punched "Rende" into the GPS and then, in a moment of spectacular overconfidence, ignored the actual property address because I assumed all roads in a small Calabrian town must surely lead to one's holiday destination. They do not. They lead to narrow streets where nonnas stare at you from doorways, to sudden one-way systems that appear to have been designed by someone throwing spaghetti at a map, and eventually to a dead end behind a church where a very patient man was unloading oranges from a lorry and found my predicament genuinely amusing. When I finally found the place, rattled and smelling faintly of stress, the late October light hit the stone facade in a way that made me forget every wrong turn. The property sat among olive trees that were heavy with harvest-ready fruit, their silver-green leaves catching the afternoon breeze. This was not the baking, tourist-thronged Calabria of August. This was something else entirely, something I had not properly prepared for. The seasonal shift governed everything about those first hours. The pool, still technically open, wore a thin cover that rippled like a grey silk sheet. I had packed for Mediterranean glamour and found myself immediately hunting for the jumper I had optimistically stuffed at the bottom of my case. The terrace, which in summer photographs had looked like the setting for endless Aperol-fuelled evenings, now demanded a cardigan and a certain stoicism. I sat there anyway, wrapped in something woollen, drinking the local red wine I had bought from a petrol station en route, and watched the light disappear behind the Sila foothills with embarrassing speed. The owner had left me a bowl of late figs, their skins splitting with sweetness, and some walnuts from the tree I could see leaning against the garden wall. These small autumnal offerings felt more generous than any staged welcome basket. The kitchen smelled faintly of wood smoke from a neighbouring chimney, though the evenings were not yet cold enough to justify lighting the fireplace myself. I kept opening the door to check, as if the season might suddenly lurch forward without warning. That first morning, I woke to mist sitting in the valley below, the town of Rende emerging slowly like a developing photograph. The seasonal produce at the small market I eventually found was limited but intense: bitter greens, the last of the peppers, pumpkins that looked like they had been grown with serious intent. I bought bread still warm from a bakery that seemed to operate on purely intuitive hours, and ate it with olive oil so peppery it made my eyes water. I had come chasing summer's tail and found something better, though I would not admit this freely to anyone. There is a particular vulnerability in arriving somewhere slightly off-season, in realising your imagined holiday belongs to a different month entirely. The place does not perform for you in the expected ways. You must meet it on its own terms, which in late October means earlier nights, unexpected chills, and the quiet company of a town going about its ordinary business while you sit on a terrace in inadequate clothing, feeling rather pleased with yourself after all. |
