About Basilicata
The mishap came within minutes of unloading the car. Determined to be organised, I marched into the garden with a carrier bag of groceries, promptly caught my flip-flop on a paving stone, and distributed cherry tomatoes across the lawn with the enthusiasm of a confetti cannon. A local cat, who had been watching from the wall with the judgemental air of a retired headmaster, sauntered over to inspect my offering. I decided this was his garden really, and I was merely paying rent in produce. That first evening set the tone for everything that followed. I did not explore. I did not plan. I sat on the terrace with a book I had been carrying unread for eighteen months, drank wine that cost less than a London coffee, and watched the sky turn that particular dusty pink you only seem to get in southern Italy. The garden filled with the clicking of cicadas and the distant clatter of someone else's dinner preparation. I felt my shoulders drop somewhere around my knees. The villa itself encouraged this magnificent laziness. The rooms stayed cool even when the afternoon heat pressed against the shutters. I developed a routine of almost embarrassing simplicity. Morning coffee in the garden, barefoot on the warm tiles. A slow wander to identify which herbs had been left growing in pots by previous guests, though I never actually cooked with them. Back to my book, interrupted only by the cat who now expected regular tribute. Lunch was bread and cheese and tomatoes that tasted of actual sunlight, eaten at the wooden table under the pergola with my feet propped on another chair. I brought four books and finished three, which might be my greatest achievement of 2024. The fourth I abandoned because it required too much thinking, and thinking was not on the itinerary. I napped in the garden hammock and woke with creases from the weave pressed into my cheek, disoriented about whether it was Tuesday or Thursday, and genuinely not caring. Time became theoretical. There was a small market in Scanzano Jonico on Wednesday morning, and I did walk there, though "walk" suggests more purpose than I managed. I drifted, really, past stalls of local vegetables and household goods, bought peaches that dripped juice down my wrist, and retreated before the heat built. That was my expedition. My adventure. I felt quite exhausted by it and required an extended hammock recovery. What struck me most, lying there with my ridiculous peach-stained hands, was how aggressively I had resisted this kind of holiday before. I used to pack itineraries with churches and viewpoints and restaurants requiring reservations. I measured trips by their productivity. Somewhere in that garden, between chapters and cat visits, I recognised something I had been running from: the uncomfortable, luxurious, slightly frightening pleasure of simply being still. The washing line that saved me on arrival stayed up all week. I never used it, of course. I wore the same three comfortable things in rotation and felt like a genius for packing so efficiently. On my final morning, I sat with my coffee and watched the same pink sky, now familiar as a friend's face, and understood that I would remember this week not for what I did but for what I refused to do. The tomatoes in the grass. The cat's disdain. The hammock's particular sway. The extraordinary, radical, wonderful nothing of it all. |
