About Abruzzo
The approach to Roseto itself should have calmed us. The Adriatic glittered to our right, the Gran Sasso mountains loomed handsomely to the left, and everywhere there were those dusty olive groves and vineyards that make you feel like you have wandered into a very pleasant film set. But no. We were still bickering about the bollard, still slightly sweaty from the plane, and still absolutely convinced we had missed our turning three times. Turns out we had not. The road simply winds about a bit. Our holiday home sat in a quiet residential pocket a short stroll from the beach, the sort of place where every balcony has a clothes drying rack and every front garden has a determined-looking lemon tree. I fumbled with the key safe, dropped the code twice, and managed to scrape my knuckle on the metal gate. My wife stood behind me with that particular expression of loving patience that I have come to recognise over fifteen years of marriage. The one that says: I am counting to ten in Italian now, just for variety. Then we stepped inside, and something shifted. The place had that immediate holiday smell - clean linen, faint traces of someone's earlier coffee, and the particular coolness of shutters kept closed against the afternoon heat. Terracotta tiles underfoot, simple wooden furniture that had seen better decades but was all the more comforting for it, and a kitchen that practically begged you to pop out for local tomatoes and a bottle of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. I found myself exhaling properly for the first time since Gatwick. I made straight for the balcony, because that is what you do. There it was: a sliver of sea visible between rooftops, a cluster of umbrella pines doing that elegant Italian sway, and somewhere below us the clatter of a neighbour preparing lunch. A dog barked. A scooter puttered past. It was all aggressively, wonderfully normal, and I felt my shoulders drop about three inches. My wife joined me with two plastic cups of the supermarket wine we had grabbed in a panic, and we stood there in silence for a moment. The bollard seemed very far away. I thought about how we do this every year - the stress of arrival, the petty arguments, the certainty that we have made a terrible mistake - and how every year the place itself quietly undoes all of that nonsense. There is something almost medicinal about the rhythm of Italian seaside towns, the way nothing happens quickly and nobody seems to mind. That evening we walked to the lungomare, the seafront promenade, and joined the passeggiata with what felt like the entire population of Roseto. Families, teenagers on phones, old chaps in linen jackets walking very small dogs. We ate fried seafood from paper cones and watched the sun drop into the Adriatic. I did not mention the bollard once, though my wife did raise an eyebrow when I reached for the car keys the next morning. Some holidays start perfectly. Ours never do. But I am starting to think the messy arrivals are half the point - the necessary contrast that makes the first balcony wine, the first sea view, the first slow evening walk, feel like something you have genuinely earned. |
