About Greece Mainland
I have never been a natural navigator, which is why trusting me with the hire car directions from Athens Airport to our villa in Lagonisi Koropi was, in hindsight, a decision made in holiday optimism rather than practical wisdom. My partner handed me the phone with the route loaded, I nodded with entirely misplaced confidence, and within twenty minutes we were somewhere near Markopoulo Mesogaias discussing whether that olive grove looked familiar from the satellite view.

The mishap, when it came, was gloriously small and entirely my own doing. I had insisted on stopping at a roadside bakery for spanakopita, reasoning that proper arrival sustenance was essential. What I had not accounted for was the enthusiastic nature of Greek bakery packaging. I emerged triumphant, flaky pastry in hand, leaned into the car to deposit my prize on the dashboard, and promptly sat on my sunglasses. Not just any sunglasses. My only sunglasses, purchased specifically for this trip, now reduced to a tribute to modern art somewhere between my left thigh and the driver's seat. My partner looked at me. I looked at the remains. The spanakopita, at least, remained intact, which felt like the universe offering partial credit for effort.

We found the villa eventually, winding through lanes where the sat nav developed what I can only describe as an existential crisis, announcing turns into stone walls with increasing desperation. The property sat among similar low-rise whitewashed buildings, nothing ostentatious, nothing pretending to be anything other than what it was: a straightforward Greek mainland holiday home with a pool that glinted in the afternoon light like a promise.

My first impression, once I stopped mourning my eyewear, was of space and stillness. After the airport chaos and my navigational performance, the quiet felt almost theatrical. The villa opened into a living area that managed to be simple without being sparse, the kind of place where you immediately know where to put your bags and where the kettle lives. I am particular about kettles on arrival. A holiday property can have all the architectural charm in the world, but if I cannot locate tea-making facilities within ninety seconds, something fundamental has failed.

The pool terrace demanded immediate investigation, as pool terraces always do. I made the traditional British error of dipping a toe and declaring it "not too bad," then performed the full immersion shriek that my partner has learned to find endearing through years of practice. The water was perfect, of course, once the initial thermal shock passed. I floated on my back, broken sunglasses forgotten, and watched a swallow trace impossible patterns against the blue.

What struck me then, treading water in that modest pool in Koropi, was how quickly the particular anxiety of arrival dissolves. The wrong turns, the crushed possessions, the sat nav's breakdown - they become the story rather than the stress. I thought about how often I anticipate the smooth version of travel, the seamless transition from one life to another, when the messy version is usually what I remember and what I actually need. The spanakopita crumbs in the hire car footwell would become archaeological evidence of this specific afternoon. The sunglasses, buried in a bin in Markopoulo, had served their purpose in their own strange way.

By evening we had established our positions: my partner on the terrace with wine, me attempting to cook something with the local tomatoes that tasted better than anything I had planned. The villa's kitchen was functional rather than aspirational, which suited my cooking abilities perfectly. We ate outside as the light softened, watching the distant shimmer that might have been the sea or might have been heat haze, neither of us motivated to verify which.

That first night I slept better than I had in months, the particular exhaustion of arrival and the particular peace of having finally, despite everything, arrived.
