About Greece Mainland
The drive from Athens had been going almost suspiciously well until I realised, somewhere past Thermopylae, that I'd left my entire bag of summer clothes on the bed at home. There I was, heading to Kamena Vourla in late May with nothing but a hoodie, jeans, and the optimistic pair of flip-flops I'd worn for the flight. My partner found this considerably funnier than I did, which I suppose was fair enough given I'd spent the previous evening lecturing everyone about packing light and packing right.

We arrived at the property as the afternoon heat was beginning to soften, that particular Greek mainland sweetness in the air where mountain herbs and sea salt seem to have reached an agreement. The spring landscape was doing that extraordinary thing of being both lush and sun-baked simultaneously, wildflowers clinging to rocky slopes while the first real warmth of the year settled over the Malian Gulf. Our terrace looked out across water that shifted between turquoise and something deeper, the kind of view that makes you forgive yourself for being an idiot about luggage.

That first evening, the season announced itself properly. The temperature dropped just enough to make my accidental winter wardrobe feel like a curious blessing rather than the disaster it was. We sat outside with a bottle of local retsina, watching the last ferries drift across the gulf toward the islands, and I understood something about this time of year that July visitors probably miss entirely. The spring light lingers differently, stretching the afternoon into a generosity of golden hour that feels almost excessive, as if the day cannot bear to end.

Morning brought the seasonal soundtrack in full force. Swallows had arrived for their summer residency, darting between the property and the hillside with that particular urgency of birds who know they have limited time to get everything done. The owner had left us fresh eggs and oranges, the latter still slightly green at the edges, that sharp April-sweetness that disappears once the real heat arrives. I ate three standing at the kitchen window, juice running down my wrist, wearing my partner's too-small borrowed t-shirt and feeling utterly ridiculous and entirely content.

The beach below was not yet organised into rows of loungers, which apparently happens by mid-June like some annual military operation. Instead, we found a scattering of locals and the occasional German walker, everyone moving with that unhurried pace of people who know the crowded months are coming but haven't quite started yet. The water carried the memory of winter, a briskness that demanded commitment rather than casual wading. I yelped going in, which a fisherman found entertaining, and emerged feeling genuinely alive in a way that heated pools and August seas never quite manage.

By our third day, I'd stopped mourning my shorts entirely. The season had become the point, really. We walked the coastal path toward the thermal springs as evening approached, that magical hour when the day's accumulated warmth meets cooling air and everything feels possible. The first fireflies were beginning their negotiations with dusk, another seasonal gift I hadn't expected.

I bought a terrible souvenir t-shirt in the village to supplement my limited options, and wore it with genuine pride. Some holidays teach you that timing matters more than preparation, that arriving at the right moment can forgive almost any personal incompetence. Kamena Vourla in late spring, slightly chilly mornings and all, was exactly that kind of timing.
