The thing about driving on the right in Crete is that you remember it eventually, usually right after you've nearly clipped a goat. That was my first impression of Kokkino Chorio, a village so determinedly peaceful that even the livestock couldn't be bothered to move with any urgency. I'd spent ten minutes circling the same roundabout in Chania, muttering "right side, right side" like a mantra, before finally escaping onto the winding road east. The satnav had given up somewhere near Vamos, leaving me to navigate by instinct and the occasional helpful local pointing vaguely towards the hills.

I found the cottage by accident, which felt appropriate. The key was exactly where the property notes said it would be, tucked in a little metal box that required the kind of code-entry precision I absolutely did not possess after four hours of concentrated wrong-side driving. Three attempts, some creative swearing, and one dropped sunglasses case later, I was in.

And then I stopped.

The garden did that to you. It wasn't manicured or designed or anything so deliberate. It was simply there, full of olive trees that had clearly seen better centuries, geraniums spilling from terracotta pots, and a terrace with a view that made me forget I'd been holding a heavy suitcase. I put it down. I sat. A gecko watched me from the wall with what I chose to interpret as approval.

The next three days barely registered as activity by any normal measure. I read three quarters of a novel I'd been carrying since January, its spine finally cracking somewhere around page two hundred while I lay on a sun lounger that had moulded itself to a hundred previous holidaymakers. The cushion had a faint smell of rosemary and dust, which sounds unpleasant but wasn't. Every hour or so I'd relocate to the kitchen for coffee, then to the terrace for more reading, then back to the garden when the afternoon sun shifted. The olive trees made excellent company, rustling their leaves in a language I didn't need to understand.

I did walk to the village once, a steep ten-minute wander that confirmed my suspicion that exercise was overrated. The local shop sold everything and nothing in particular, run by a woman who seemed genuinely surprised anyone would want to buy anything. I purchased bread, tomatoes, and some local cheese that I later ate with my fingers while standing at the kitchen window, watching the light change over the hills. It was absolutely the best meal I'd had in months.

There was a pool, technically, though I used it more as a decorative water feature to look at between chapters. Once I floated on my back for twenty minutes, counting clouds and getting genuinely competitive about it. Seventeen. The clouds won.

What struck me, gradually, was how little I missed. No museums, no ancient ruins, no frantic sightseeing to justify the airfare. Just the rhythm of very small things: the coffee pot gurgling, a page turning, the afternoon breeze starting up precisely when you'd begun to feel warm. I realised I'd spent years treating holidays as achievements to be completed, checklists to be conquered. Here, achievement was successfully doing nothing before lunch. The garden didn't care about my productivity. The olive trees had witnessed empires rise and fall without moving an inch.

On my final morning, I packed with the enthusiasm of someone being asked to leave a party they were enjoying. The satnav found me immediately this time, as if mocking my earlier struggles. But I took the long way down, windows open, driving slowly enough to let the goats win.
