About Thuringia
I have never been particularly good at reading maps, which is how I found myself reversing down a single-track lane in rural Thuringia, convinced I had taken a wrong turn somewhere near Gera. My partner sat beside me with that particular expression of British restraint, the one that says "I told you so" without actually saying it. The sat nav had given up entirely, displaying nothing but grey static and what I can only describe as a profound digital sigh. We were looking for a holiday cottage in Zadelsdorf, a village so peaceful it barely registers on most maps, and I had somehow managed to miss it twice.

The third attempt proved successful, largely because a local chap walking his dog took pity on us. He pointed through a gap in the hedgerow and said something in German that sounded encouraging, or possibly a warning about the lane width. Either way, we pressed on, and suddenly there it was: a traditional Thuringian cottage with timber framing, a proper garden with actual apple trees, and a front door painted a shade of blue that suggested someone with excellent taste and a steady hand.

The mishap of our arrival, the reversing, the sat nav meltdown, all of it dissolved the moment I stepped out of the car. The air smelled of cut grass and woodsmoke from somewhere distant. A blackbird was having what sounded like a very strong opinion about something in the nearest tree. I stood there with my keys in one hand and a half-eaten motorway sandwich in the other, feeling distinctly overdressed and overcomplicated.

The cottage interior was exactly what I needed without knowing I needed it. Solid wooden furniture that had clearly seen decades of use, a kitchen with a proper table for lingering over breakfast, and windows that opened outward with satisfying clunks rather than sliding sideways with that anxious modern rattle. I put the kettle on immediately, because some British instincts survive even the most confusing of journeys.

That first afternoon set the pattern for the entire week. We did almost nothing, and it was glorious. I spent a good hour simply sitting in the garden with a book I had been meaning to read for eighteen months, achieving perhaps four pages because I kept being distracted by a very determined bumblebee working its way through the lavender. My partner dozed in a deckchair with his hat over his face, occasionally making that particular noise that suggests profound contentment or possibly mild snoring.

The garden became our world. Morning coffee on the small terrace, watching the light change across the lawn. Afternoon reading in the dappled shade of the apple trees, where the only interruption was the occasional thump of ripe fruit falling to the grass. Evening drinks as the swallows performed their aerial displays overhead, darting and swooping with an energy I found almost exhausting to observe.

I had brought a list of local attractions, museums in nearby towns, walking routes through the Thuringian countryside. The list remained folded in my suitcase. On day three I unfolded it, read it with genuine interest, then refolded it with even greater contentment. The nearest village shop, a ten-minute amble down lanes bordered by hedgerows heavy with blackberries, provided everything we needed: bread, cheese, some excellent local beer, and conversation that required my limited German and much friendly gesturing.

There is something particular about the light in Thuringia, a softness I had not expected. It made reading in the garden feel like a properly indulgent activity rather than merely passing time. I found myself choosing books I had abandoned years ago, picking them up with fresh patience. The narrative of doing nothing became its own quiet story. Each day had a rhythm: early morning bird song, the slow unfolding of the garden into sunlight, the gradual retreat to shade as afternoon warmth built, the evening return to the terrace as the air cooled and the sky turned that particular pale blue that precedes proper darkness.

On our final evening, I sat with my feet on a garden bench, a half-finished novel face-down on my lap, and watched a hedgehog make its methodical way across the lawn. My partner brought out two glasses of wine and said nothing, which was exactly right. I thought about our arrival, the panic of the wrong turns, the sat nav surrendering to the countryside. I had come expecting to explore Thuringia, to tick off sights and accumulate experiences. Instead I had spent a week learning the particular quality of silence in a village garden, the weight of a good book in idle hands, the profound luxury of having nowhere to be and nothing to prove.

We left the next morning with the car packed, the garden empty behind us, and my map-reading confidence at an all-time low. I did not mind at all. Some journeys, I had finally understood, are measured not in miles covered but in stillness found.
