About Schleswig Holstein
The mishap that started it all was entirely my fault. In my enthusiasm to pack light, I had left the actual printed directions on the kitchen table and was relying on my phone, which had developed a charming habit of losing signal precisely when we needed it most. My partner was doing that thing where they breathe very calmly and say "just pull over" in a voice that suggested they were imagining very creative uses for the road atlas we also did not have. We had stopped at what I thought was a petrol station but turned out to be a farm shop selling nothing but asparagus and aggression. I tried to ask for directions in my GCSE German and was met with a silence so profound I could hear my own dignity packing its bags and leaving. Eventually we found the Schoenhagen Doerphof by the gloriously old-fashioned method of following a tractor. The property sits in that gentle, undulating countryside that Schleswig-Holstein does so well, all patchwork fields and sudden glimpses of the Baltic between stands of beech and oak. It is the sort of landscape that makes you feel you have stumbled into a slightly twee watercolour painting, complete with suspiciously picturesque red-roofed farm buildings. Our first evening was spent not in planned exploration but in what I can only call therapeutic wandering. Having failed so comprehensively at navigation, we decided to embrace getting lost properly. We set off down a lane that looked promising, missed the turning we had intended to take, and found ourselves in a tiny hamlet called something I still cannot pronounce. There was a church the size of a generous garden shed, a bench with someone's grandfather snoozing on it, and a view across the fields that made me actually stop talking for nearly a minute, which my partner later described as the real holiday miracle. The hidden gems, when they came, were entirely accidental. We took a wrong path through some woods and emerged onto a small beach that did not appear on any map I could find, where someone had built a driftwood shelter that looked like a child's drawing of a house. We sat there for an hour watching oyster catchers work the shoreline and feeling terribly smug about our discovery, despite having done absolutely nothing to earn it. Another morning, chasing the smell of baking bread in what I thought was the direction of a village, I found instead a tiny harbour where three men were repairing nets in companionable silence and a cat was supervising from a lobster pot. By the third day of accidental discoveries, I had developed what I can only call a reckless confidence in poor navigation. We found a dairy selling the most extraordinary cheese by simply missing the entrance to a supermarket car park. We stumbled across a small museum of agricultural tools in someone's barn because I misread a sign for toilets. Each wrong turn seemed to lead somewhere more interesting than wherever we had been aiming for, and I began to wonder if this was some kind of life lesson I was supposed to be learning. The Schoenhagen Doerphof itself became our anchor in this sea of cheerful incompetence. Coming back each evening to that solid, red-brick farmhouse with its proper garden and its view across the fields, I felt something shift in my usual holiday mentality. I am normally a planner, a researcher, someone who arrives with spreadsheets and restaurant reservations. Here, with my phone still sulking in a drawer and my sense of direction thoroughly humbled, I found myself genuinely not minding what happened next. On our final morning, I took what I believed to be a shortcut to the local bakery and ended up in a completely different village, where an elderly woman took pity on my confused face and gave me directions that involved three landmarks I had never heard of and a significant amount of pointing. I found the bakery eventually, bought far too many pastries, and got lost again on the way back, discovering in the process a small pond absolutely thick with frogs who regarded me with the same expression as that first cow. I have thought about that week a great deal since returning. There is something to be said for arriving somewhere with your plans in ruins and your phone in revolt, for letting the place itself direct your attention rather than your own determined itinerary. I would not recommend my particular method of navigation to anyone, but I cannot deny that it delivered something I rarely find on holiday: the genuine surprise of the unexpected, and the quiet pleasure of not knowing what comes next. |
