About Schleswig Holstein
The mishap came at the resort entrance itself. I spotted what I thought was our designated parking area and swung in with the misplaced confidence of a man who has never reversed a caravan in his life. The gravel crunched. The caravan tilted. A wheel found something soft and unforgiving. I had, with almost artistic precision, mounted the edge of a neatly maintained grass verge designed for pedestrians and small dogs. My wife's expression suggested I had personally offended several generations of her family. A passing cyclist stopped to watch, which I choose to believe was out of admiration for my commitment to the manoeuvre rather than the comedy of the situation. Twenty minutes of undignified repositioning later, we finally located our actual spot and the proper path to our holiday home. And here is where I must offer something of a confession: for all my grumbling about modern holiday developments, there is something genuinely affecting about opening the door to a place that smells of fresh pine and distant sea air. The children thundered upstairs to claim beds with the territorial aggression of small nations negotiating borders. I stood in the kitchen area, still slightly sweaty from my gravel encounter, and noticed how the light came through the large windows in that particular flat Baltic way that Schleswig-Holstein does so well. The resort itself sits where the Schlei inlet meets the open sea, and you can feel that meeting of waters in the wind that comes steady and salt-touched across the flatlands. Our terrace looked out towards the marina, where boats sat with the patient stillness of things that know they will be wanted again come summer proper. It was early season, still brisk, and the beach areas had that lovely half-empty quality where you feel you've arrived somewhere slightly before the crowds have worked out it exists. I made tea with the particular intensity of a British man abroad who has found a proper kettle. The children discovered that the sofa was in fact also a bed and commenced bouncing with the dedication of athletes training for an event that does not exist. My wife unpacked with the methodical calm of someone who has accepted that I will contribute enthusiasm but very little practical help. What struck me, once the adrenaline of arrival had settled, was how immediately the place imposed a slower rhythm. The WiFi was perfectly functional, yet somehow less compelling than watching the light change over the water. The children, usually screen-obsessed, became fascinated by a colony of rabbits that had established itself near the resort's edge, conducting what they solemnly informed me was "very important rabbit research" each morning in their pyjamas. By evening, with the caravan safely parked and a small fire going in the outdoor pit that came with our unit, I found myself genuinely grateful for the morning's humiliation. It had burned off the restless energy of the journey and left only the willingness to sit still, to watch my daughter attempt to toast marshmallows with more hope than skill, to listen to my wife laugh at something I hadn't quite caught. The Ostsee air does something to the lungs and the temperament. You sleep deeper. You wake slower. You accept that the rabbits are indeed fascinating if you give them proper attention. We had come for a family break, for the simple architecture of days spent near water and evenings spent near warmth. The resort delivered this without pretension, without the pressured activity that so many family holidays seem to require. There was the marina to wander, the flat coastal paths to cycle badly, the Schlei waters to watch change colour with the sky. Nothing dramatic. Nothing that would feature in a glossy brochure with exclamation marks. Just the honest pleasure of being somewhere that knows exactly what it is. I still think about that grass verge sometimes. It sits in my memory as a perfect introduction to a holiday that taught me, yet again, that the best moments come after you've stopped trying to look competent and simply allowed yourself to arrive. |
