About Schleswig Holstein
The drive up from the ferry at Puttgarden had been textbook autumnal. Golden fields, low sun, that particular quality of light that makes everything look like a postcard. By the time we turned onto the smaller roads towards the Feriendorf Wardersee, the trees had closed in overhead and the light had shifted to something more serious. The kind of light that says "enjoy your walk, but don't miss tea time." Arriving at the holiday village, the first thing that struck me was the smell. Not the pine-scented marketing version, but a proper, damp, earthy smell of fallen leaves and lake water and woodsmoke from somewhere in the distance. The reception area was warm and bright, a deliberate contrast to the grey afternoon that had settled over the Wardersee. Our cottage sat near the water's edge, and I noticed immediately how the seasonal quiet had settled over everything. No splashing children, no barbecue smoke, no bicycles ringing their bells. Just a few determined ducks and the occasional creak of a moored boat against its pontoon. The cottage itself embraced autumn with open arms. Thick curtains, proper heating, a kitchen that practically demanded soup-making. I unpacked my inadequate luggage with the sheepishness of a man who'd clearly confused Schleswig-Holstein with the south of France. My partner produced a spare fleece she'd sensibly packed "just in case" - though her expression suggested this had been packed with the certainty of my wrongness rather than mere caution. That first evening, we walked the path around the lake's edge as the light faded properly. The trees were in their final flourish, russet and copper against the darkening water. Other cottages showed warm squares of light, and I caught the smell of someone's proper dinner cooking - something with cabbage and sausage, something that made my travel snacks seem particularly sad. The path was damp and occasionally muddy, and I found myself grateful for the quiet season, for having this landscape almost to ourselves, for the particular intimacy that comes from sharing a cold walk and a warm return. Back inside, we cranked the heating and made tea with the seriousness of people who'd earned it. Through the window, the lake had become simply darkness and the occasional reflection. I thought about how different this would feel in high summer - the bustle, the swimming, the late light. But autumn had given us something else entirely. A permission to be still, to be indoors, to be slightly overwhelmed by the elemental quality of a northern German October. I fell asleep that night to the sound of wind in the trees and the particular silence of a lake with no boats moving upon it. The morning would bring grey light and the discovery that my "mild" prediction had also failed to account for morning frost. But that first impression - of arriving into a season that knew exactly what it was doing, and finding a place that matched it perfectly - stayed with me. Some holidays you plan. Others, like the weather, simply arrive, and you learn to pack better next time. |
