About Mecklenburg Western Pomerania
I have never been so relieved to see a row of wooden bungalows in my life. The journey to Fischerdorf Zirchow had been one of those trips where everything goes slightly wrong in a way that feels almost scripted, and by the time we pulled into the holiday park I was half-convinced someone was filming us for one of those hidden camera shows.

It started with the sat-nav. I had dutifully entered the address, smug about my preparation, only to discover halfway through Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania that I had somehow selected a route avoiding all motorways. This turned our straightforward drive from Berlin into a three-hour scenic tour of every minor road, farm track, and suspiciously narrow lane in eastern Germany. My partner sat in the passenger seat making increasingly pointed comments about the scenery, which after the first hour consisted mainly of potato fields and my own mounting panic.

The real trouble began at a petrol station somewhere near Anklam. I had popped in for a coffee and some emergency snacks, and in my caffeine-deprived state managed to lock the keys in the boot. There we stood, two Brits gesticulating at a locked Volkswagen in a forecourt where nobody seemed to speak English and my GCSE German had evaporated like morning mist. The breakdown service took ninety minutes, during which I ate an entire family bag of crisps out of stress and my partner developed what I can only describe as a meaningful silence.

By the time we actually reached Usedom, I was frazzled beyond recognition. We missed the turning for Zirchow twice because the sign was partially hidden by a hedge that someone had apparently planted for exactly that purpose. When we finally spotted the Fischerdorf, I nearly wept with relief. Little wooden houses with neat porches, a glimpse of water through the trees, and actual parking spaces that did not require a three-point turn through someone's garden.

Our bungalow was one of the terraced ones, painted in that warm honey colour that Scandinavian holiday parks seem to favour. I fumbled with the key code, convinced I would somehow mess this up too, but the door clicked open and we practically fell inside. The first thing that struck me was the smell of pine and something else, something clean and slightly salty from the nearby Baltic. After six hours of car air freshener and petrol station coffee, it was like walking into a different world.

I stood in the little kitchen area and actually laughed. Not because anything was particularly funny, but because the sheer ordinary pleasantness of the place after our chaotic journey felt almost absurd. Here was a proper hob, a kettle that looked like it actually worked, and through the window I could see a terrace with outdoor furniture that begged for a glass of wine and some serious doing-nothing.

My partner had already disappeared to investigate the bedrooms, and I heard an approving noise from upstairs. I wandered through to the living area, noting the straightforward, no-nonsense decor. Nothing trying too hard, nothing pretending to be fancier than it was. Just solid, comfortable holiday accommodation in a part of Germany that clearly understands the value of simplicity.

I stepped out onto the terrace and took my first proper breath since Berlin. The late afternoon sun was doing that golden thing it does in late summer, and somewhere nearby I could hear children playing in what I assumed was the shared garden area. A path led down toward the water, and I could see reeds moving in the light breeze.

My partner appeared beside me with two cups of tea, which I had not even heard him make. We stood there in silence for a moment, both of us slightly sunburned from the car windows, both of us smelling faintly of petrol station forecourt.

"You know," I said eventually, "I think I might actually relax here."

He raised an eyebrow in that way he has. "You locked the keys in the boot at a petrol station."

"I did," I admitted. "But look at this terrace. Look at that sky. I feel like I've earned this now."

And I had. That chaotic journey, the sat-nav nonsense, the breakdown, the hedge-hidden signpost, all of it had somehow distilled into this moment of pure, uncomplicated arrival. The Fischerdorf Zirchow was not trying to impress me with luxury or gimmicks. It was simply a good, honest holiday spot in a beautiful corner of Germany, and after the day I had endured, that felt like exactly the right thing.

I finished my tea watching the light change over the water, already wondering what the local fish restaurant might be like for dinner, already feeling the tension of the journey beginning to loosen its grip. Tomorrow I would explore properly, walk the coastal paths, perhaps brave the Baltic for a swim if I was feeling brave. But for now, standing on that wooden terrace with a cup of tea cooling in my hands, I was simply and thoroughly glad to be exactly where I was.
