I should have known the holiday was going to be eventful when I packed the sat nav but forgot the charging cable. There we were, three hours into the drive to Tossens in Lower Saxony, with my phone dangling from the glovebox at four percent battery and my wife reading directions off a screenshot like she was deciphering enemy code. The kids had already eaten all the snacks I'd hidden in the footwell, including the emergency Haribo I'd taped under the passenger seat. Amateur mistake. They found it within twenty minutes.

We'd booked one of those proper German holiday homes, the sort with wood panelling and a terrace that promises long evenings with a beer and a book. The website made it look idyllic. What it didn't show was my particular talent for misreading German road signs. I took what I thought was a scenic shortcut through some farmland and ended up on a track that was definitely meant for tractors. The Renault Scenic has many virtues. Off-roading is not among them. We bounced along for what felt like miles, my daughter asking repeatedly if this was "the adventure part," until we spotted a farmer who looked at us with the weary sympathy of a man who'd seen this before. He pointed us back toward the proper road with a gesture that managed to be helpful and judgmental simultaneously.

Proper directions restored, we finally rolled into Tossens proper. It's one of those North Sea coast spots that feels genuinely local rather than touristy, all low brick houses and flat horizons. The holiday park sat just back from the dyke, neat rows of terraced cottages with little gardens out front. Ours had a nameplate and everything. Very grown-up. I immediately reversed into the parking space with the enthusiasm of a man who'd been driving too long, clipping the recycling bin with a sound that made the neighbour's dog bark for ten solid minutes.

The key was in a lockbox, which I fumbled with while my son announced he needed the toilet urgently. Inside, the place had that particular German holiday rental smell of clean linen and slightly too much furniture. Everything was functional and well-maintained in that way that makes you feel simultaneously grateful and conscious of your own household's chaos. The kitchen had actual sharp knives, which felt like a luxury after years of blunt rental equipment. My wife opened the terrace doors and the North Sea breeze came straight in, carrying that particular coastal smell of mudflat and salt.

I stood there with a cup of tea that tasted slightly of the local water, watching my kids already arguing over who got which bedroom, and felt that particular holiday sensation of being simultaneously exhausted and relieved. The mishaps of the journey were already becoming funny, which is the mercy of arrival. The farmer's judgmental wave. The recycling bin incident. The hidden Haribo discovered with forensic precision.

That first evening, we didn't do anything ambitious. Walked to the dyke to watch the light flatten out across the Wadden Sea. Bought bread from the little shop that was somehow still open. Cooked simple pasta and sat on the terrace as the temperature dropped, wrapped in blankets we'd found in the cupboard. My daughter fell asleep at the table, face down on her arms. My son talked endlessly about the beach we hadn't even visited yet.

I sat there with my beer going warm, listening to my wife laugh about the tractor track, and thought how these breaks work best when you let them be ordinary. No grand plans. Just the small comedy of family life in a different setting, with different bins to reverse into.
