About Lower Saxony
The mishap, when it came, was spectacularly undramatic in the way that only truly embarrassing moments can be. I'd finally found the proper track to Strandhaus Marissa, a smart wooden holiday home tucked among the dunes near Dorum-Neufeld on the Wadden Sea coast. Relief washed over me. I grabbed my suitcase, my carrier bag of snacks, and my dignity, and marched straight into what I absolutely believed was the front door of my home for the week. It was not. It was the utility shed belonging to the neighbouring cottage. A very nice Dutch gentleman looked up from his bicycle repairs with the patient expression of someone who has witnessed this exact scene approximately forty-seven times before. I retreated backwards making apologetic noises that I can only describe as a blend of English politeness and primal embarrassment, eventually locating the actual entrance three metres to the left. Not my finest hour. But here's the thing about first impressions: they recover remarkably quickly when you're standing on a proper wooden deck, breathing in that particular North Sea smell of salt and mudflats and distant rain. Strandhaus Marissa sits in that satisfying sweet spot where you feel properly away from everything without being inconvenient. The Wadden Sea National Park is practically on your doorstep, and on my arrival afternoon the tide was doing that extraordinary retreat it does here, leaving vast shimmering mudflats where an hour earlier there had been proper ocean. I stood there with my still-unpacked suitcase and my slightly bruised ego, watching oystercatchers dart about like they were late for important appointments, and felt something in my shoulders actually release. The house itself has that pleasing Scandinavian-leaning simplicity that German coastal architecture does rather well. Light wood everywhere, big windows that practically beg you to stare at the horizon instead of unpacking, and a little kitchen that immediately suggested evening meals of local fish and perhaps more wine than strictly necessary. I made the rookie error of testing the shower before investigating the hot water situation, which resulted in thirty seconds of arctic contemplation followed by a scramble that my neighbouring Dutch friend probably found highly entertaining. Second mishap of the day, if anyone's counting. I certainly wasn't. By evening I'd managed the basics: functioning shower, wine located, small local supermarket raided for bread and cheese and something claiming to be North Sea shrimp. I sat on that deck as the light went proper coastal-grey, watching the navigation lights on distant ships, and thought about how arrival chaos always feels like the defining story until suddenly it isn't. The sat nav betrayal, the shed incident, the cold shower - they'd already become the funny preamble rather than the point. Lower Saxony had very politely waited for me to stop making a spectacle of myself, then offered up its particular quiet magic: wide skies, proper dark, and the faint sound of the tide turning somewhere beyond the dunes. I raised my glass to the Wadden Sea, to better navigation tomorrow, and to the small humiliations that make the best holiday stories afterwards. |
