About Lower Saxony
The satnav had been insisting for a good twenty minutes that we were practically there, which in satnav language meant we were hopelessly lost somewhere in the flat, green nothingness of rural Lower Saxony. My partner was driving, I was navigating with all the competence of a drunk pigeon, and between us we had managed to turn what should have been a straightforward four-hour journey from the ferry into something closer to six. The mishap, when it came, was almost inevitable. We spotted a promising-looking lane, bounced down it with misplaced optimism, and promptly found ourselves nose-to-nose with a tractor the size of a small bungalow. The farmer, bless him, found our predicament far funnier than we did, and after some elaborate hand gestures and my attempt at schoolboy German that sounded more like a medical condition, he reversed with the ease of a man who has done this a thousand times before. We, meanwhile, had to execute a seventeen-point turn while he watched with what I can only describe as pastoral amusement.

By the time we actually found Strandhaus Marissa, tucked among the trees near Dornumersiel, I was ready to abandon the car and simply live in the ditch. But then the front door opened, and something in me unclenched. The place had that particular quality of proper holiday cottages, the ones that have absorbed decades of slow mornings and afternoon naps into their very walls. Nothing flashy, nothing trying too hard. Just a solid, comfortable house with wooden floors that creaked in familiar places and windows that framed the garden like paintings that changed with the light.

I dropped my bag in the hallway with the theatrical exhaustion of someone who has survived genuine hardship, which felt entirely proportionate after the tractor incident. The garden was what got me, though. Not manicured, not designed, just a generous patch of grass with some established shrubs and a couple of weathered chairs that looked like they had been waiting specifically for me. I could already see myself doing absolutely nothing in them for extended periods.

The first morning, I woke without an alarm for the first time in months. The light came through the curtains differently there, softer somehow, as if even the sun understood the local pace. I made coffee in the small kitchen, carried it outside in my socks, and sat in one of those chairs until the mug went cold in my hands. A blackbird was doing something industrious in the hedge. I watched it with the focused attention usually reserved for important sporting events, and felt no urge whatsoever to be productive.

We had brought books, naturally. Stacks of them, the holiday reading we always optimistically pack and sometimes barely touch. Here, though, they became the day's central architecture. I read in the garden until my neck ached, moved to the sofa until I felt guilty about the sunshine, returned to the garden until the light faded. My partner developed a similarly rigorous schedule involving the other chair, occasional napping, and commentary on whatever I had just read aloud. We did not discuss work. We did not plan excursions. The nearest we came to activity was a slow wander down to the Wadden Sea coast, where we stood on the dyke and watched the tide do its patient, ancient work.

On the third day, I realised I had not checked my phone in twenty-four hours. The discovery brought not anxiety but a strange, gentle pride, like remembering a skill I used to have. I made a cup of tea to celebrate and sat with it in the late afternoon sun, watching nothing in particular, thinking nothing in particular, feeling the particular joy of being temporarily unnecessary to the world's operations.

The farmer and his tractor had given us something, I decided. A story, yes, but also a kind of permission. We had arrived slightly ridiculous, slightly humbled, and the cottage had simply accepted us anyway. There was no recovering from holiday mode after that. I did not want to. The books grew dog-eared, the garden chairs developed our particular impressions, and the days passed in the wonderful, unremarkable rhythm of doing very little, very slowly, very deliberately. I have never been more grateful for a wrong turn.
