About Lower Saxony
The mishap, though. I need to tell you about the mishap. We pulled up to the M Kids Edition Marissa, and I leapt out of the car with the energy of someone who had been sitting in the same position since dawn. I grabbed what I thought was our welcome folder from the glove compartment and marched up to the key safe with the confidence of a woman who had read the instructions twice. The code worked, the key turned, and I flung open the door with a theatrical flourish that I immediately regretted. Wrong house. Not just wrong house, but very much someone else's still-occupied house, complete with a startled cat and a pair of walking boots in the hallway that definitely did not belong to us. I backed out so fast I nearly tripped over the threshold, hissing apologies to an empty hallway while my children howled with laughter from the car. The actual Marissa was three doors down. I had misread the house number in my eagerness to escape the vehicle. The welcome folder, it turned out, was from a cottage we had stayed in two years ago in Cornwall, which my partner had apparently been using to store receipts. The real Marissa, when we finally found it, was worth every mortifying second. First impressions matter, and this place made a good one despite my chaotic entrance. The timber framing and that classic northern German architecture immediately felt welcoming, like a house that had seen families come and go and knew exactly what we needed. The kids bolted past me before I could even remind them about shoes, straight through to the open-plan living area where the kitchen and dining space flowed together in that effortless way that makes you think, yes, we could actually cook here without wanting to murder each other. I stood in the doorway for a moment, still clutching the wrong key and the wrong paperwork, and felt something shift in my chest. The drive had been awful. My navigation skills were clearly questionable. I had just invaded a stranger's home like an extremely polite burglar. But the light coming through those windows, the smell of proper wood and clean linen, the distant sound of my children already arguing over who got which bedroom - it was perfect in its ordinary, messy, holiday way. The garden sloped down toward a small terrace area, and beyond that I could see the kind of green landscape that makes you understand why people write poetry about Lower Saxony. Flat enough to cycle, pretty enough to photograph, peaceful enough to make you forget you ever owned a work email address. I spotted a barbecue area that I immediately claimed for myself, mentally planning sausages and slightly too much local beer while my partner wrestled our cases from the car. By evening, we had established our rhythm. The children had tested every bed, every chair, and the resilience of the wifi connection. I had successfully operated the coffee machine without injury. We walked to the nearest bakery in the morning, because apparently this is what you do in Germany and I was determined to do it properly, returning with more bread than any four people could reasonably consume and absolutely no regrets. I keep thinking about that wrong door, though. How easily I barrelled through, so certain I was in the right place. There is probably a metaphor in there somewhere about assumptions and slowing down and reading the actual house number like a functioning adult. I will leave that for someone else to unpack. I was too busy enjoying being exactly where I needed to be, three doors down from disaster, finally still. |
